Wonju’s Residential College A New Model of University Education Beginning in the year 2007, the Wonju Campus has adopted the Residential College (RC) policy, in which the entire freshman population lives in the dormitories along with their professors. This is an education program which facilitates all-round education right on campus. Round the Clock Mentoring At the RC, Residential Master Professors and Residential Advisors (RA) live with the freshmen during the week. The Masters provide counseling and consulting for the freshmen, and invite the students in small groups for talks and parties at least once every semester. The students are divided into small groups of 20 in which they study and live together. RAs are assigned to each group. RAs consist of students in their second year or higher who work as mediators between the masters and students and check on the leadership activities of the freshmen. Residential Colloquia and Leadership Training The RC curriculum consists of Residential Colloquia (after-school group lectures) and Leadership Development Classes. This semester, 71 colloquia were opened. The Colloquia are divided into experience, participation, and problem-solving categories and students are able to select a colloquium based on their interests. In their first term, in addition to a colloquium of their choice, students are required to participate in at least one club activity, at least one sport, and self-esteem development training as part of their leadership training. During the second term, volunteer activities are added to this regimen. The Changes RC Has Brought About It has only been one month since the RC program began, but already visible changes are appearing. Freshmen students are visiting the library more often. Every week, an RC dinner concert is held at the student cafeteria by the music clubs. The RC is in effect changing the lives of Wonju Campus students. Hopefully, it will become the propelling force to help Wonju become a nationally-acclaimed university that is known to be “small but competitive”.
