He is especially acknowledged for authoring the key medical textbooks that served as the foundations of modern Korean medicine. From April 1975 to July 1980, he held of office, first of Acting President and later President of Yonsei University, steering the University in a time of great expansion and change. After his retirement in 1983, he continued his research and teaching as an emeritus professor. His productiveness can be attested by the publication of the widely used textbook on pharmacology in 1984. Throughout the course of his career, Doctor Lee received many prestigious awards, including two National Medals of Honor, Order of Camellia (1970) and Order of Mugunghwa (1979), awarded by the government of the Republic of Korea, and the National Academy of Sciences Award (1983). His family is well-known as a “doctor family” with his sons and sons-in-law all working as doctors. Doctor Lee’s funeral was held as an official University Funeral Ceremony on April 28 at the Luce Chapel, attended by many of his former colleagues, students, and associates, including University President Jung Chang-young, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technology Kim Woo-sik, former Chairman of the Board of Yonsei Corporation Lee Chun-hwan, and other former Presidents of the University. As University President, he achieved innumerable milestones for Yonsei, including the building of the Main Library and the Yongdong Severance Hospital. He provided the stepping stones on which we are treading to become a world-class institution. We will always remember Doctor Lee’s spirit and love for Yonsei.” Doctor Lee’s coffin was lowered during a second ceremony at the Namhangang Park Cemetary in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do.
