New Method Developed for Detecting Heavy Metal Ions

Wonju Campus Biomedical Engineering Professor Sang Woo Lee’s research team has developed a new technique, dielectrophoretic tweezers-based force spectroscopy, for detecting silver ions and other heavy metals that cause adverse environmental effects and may lead to DNA damage. The results of the team’s research were published as the cover article in Analytical Chemistry, a leading journal in the field. The article’s title is “Detection of Silver Ions Using Dielectrophoretic Tweezers-Based Force Spectroscopy.”
 
The research, said Professor Lee,“has paved the way for the detection of actual environmental nanotoxic ions at high speeds and sensitivity and the development of smart sensors capable of feature analyses of combined interactions with various polynucleotides. It is hoped that this research will open new horizons for research on nanotoxic ions and polynucleotide interplay.”
