Severance Provides Medical Assistance
to 1,200 Syrian Refugees in Jordan

Between September 23 and October 1, a medical assistance team from Severance Hospital was dispatched to Jordan to provide urgently needed medical care for Syrian refugees. The team consisted of nine doctors, six nurses, a pharmacist, and an emergency medical technician.

Roughly 4.8 million Syrians have been displaced since the civil war broke out in 2011. More than 2 million have fled to neighboring countries in the region, which has severely strained the medical resources of countries like Jordan. Severance’s medical team provided aid in the cities of Jerash and Baqa’a, the latter of which is already home to a large number of Palestinian refugees.

The team members worked tirelessly throughout the trip, often skipping meals and working late into the evening. Of the 1,200 patients they treated, roughly half were children. There were also many individuals suffering from chronic illnesses, such as respiratory diseases, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Of the Severance medical mission, Inchul Park, head of the Korea Medical Network for Disaster Relief, said: “By providing medical assistance to Syrian war refugees, we have been able to realize a humanitarian spirit and gain experience in international disaster relief.”
