‘Yonsei University Volunteer Center’Test-Operates
Korean Language Curriculum with Vietnam’s Can Tho University

The Yonsei University Volunteer Center and the Graduate School of Education is test-operating a Korean language curriculum at Vietnam’s prestigious Can Tho University, located in the Mekong Delta. The Can Tho area is also home to a sizable population of Vietnamese women who returned to their country after marriages with Korean men ended in divorce. Currently, there about 3,000 such women living in the region.

The Korean language curriculum is a trial operation intended to spur a longlasting collaborative relationship between Yonsei and Can Tho. From July 4 to 29, sixty students in the Can Tho College of Aquaculture and Fisheries are taking beginner-level Korean language courses. Prior to the start of the program, two Yonsei Education graduate students, who are teaching the courses, received training in basic Vietnamese language and culture.

Yonsei Graduate Teaching Fellow So-young Lim said of the experience at Can Tho: “I am very happy to teach in Vietnam. I will apply the knowledge that I learn here at the graduate school. As this is the first time for such an occasion, I hope our teaching work will produce continuing results.”

The Yonsei University Volunteer Center plans to develop and operate programs for the Vietnamese women and their children in the future with collaboration from international organizations and Korean law firms.
