Korean Language Institute Shares Korean Language with the World

Yonsei’s Korean Language Institute (KLI) was established in 1959 as the first institute to provide intensive Korean language courses for international students. Today, KLI has more than 150 language instructors, all of whom hold at least a master’s degree. KLI instructors are also active in developing textbooks and multimedia course materials.

Systematic Curriculum and Diverse Activities

KLI offers seven distinct programs. Students not only learn the language; they also experience Korean culture through diverse activities that include cooking classes and traditional music. To strengthen the quality of the programs, KLI actively conducts research on Korean language education and learning materials.

■ KLI Programs

Regular Program

The Regular Program is a systematic Korean language study program, offered to foreign nationals and Koreans living abroad, seeking to fluently speak Korean for university or graduate school admissions and business or employment. The majority of Korean language students apply to this
program.

On average, 1,600 students from over 60 countries study at KLI every semester. Students will have the opportunity to meet people from various countries and cultures. KLI offers two regular programs, a six-level and an eight-level, and 90 percent of the students enroll in the six-level program. The eight-level program is suited for students from English-speaking countries and those whose native languages are very different from Korean. Applications can now be made for the 2016 fall semester Regular Program, which commences September 1.

Summer Special Program

The Summer Special Program is designed for students who want to take advantage of their summer vacation to learn Korean language and culture. This program combines Korean studies with optional trips to historical and cultural sites. Students also get to experience diverse Korean culture through Korean cooking, taekwondo, and K-pop dance classes.

3-Week Program

The 3-Week Program is perfect for those seeking a short-term, intensive Korean experience. This program is offered in the spring, summer, and winter. Many students choose to begin their studies at KLI with this program before moving to the Regular Program. Applications for the 3-Week summer course are now being accepted.

University Korean Program
(International Campus Korean Language Institute)

The University Korean Program caters to international students studying in Korean universities or planning to enroll in one. Students learn the Korean language necessary for effective learning at the university level in a short period of time.

Besides customized programs and diverse cultural experiences, KLI also offers one-on-one language exchanges between its students and Yonsei students, allowing the KLI students to practice their Korean skills. It also holds a writing contest for foreigners with the aim of promoting the significance and sophistication of the Korean language. At the same time, the contest also heightens interest in learning the Korean language among international students and residents.

As a pioneer of Korean language education, KLI is in the forefront of Korean language education. It continues to develop Korean language education at home and abroad, and it aims to contribute to the development of global society and culture.
