New Molecular Communication Prototype Developed

-Communication Without Radio Signals

A research team headed by Professor Chae Chan-byoung from the School of Integrated Technology has developed the prototype for an innovative new communication system that transmits information without using radio signals. Their work suggests an important advance in diffusion-based molecular communication, as the new multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) design significantly improves the data rate.

The research results appeared as a special article in the March edition of the Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, which is published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The title of the article is “Molecular MIMO: From Theory to Prototype”; the prototype was also honored with the Best Demo Award at the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications held in Hong Kong last April.

Of their research and the new prototype, Professor Chae’s team said: “After establishing a theory for a new communication paradigm that does not use radio signals, using mathematical analysis, and completing experimental validation, we anticipate that the system will have various applications, such as for nano IoT and human body communication.”
