Kumho Art Hall Offers Abundance of Classical Music

-Eight Concert Performances Held over Three Weeks

Between October 27 and November 18, the Yonsei Kumho Art Hall held eight different concerts to celebrate its grand opening on the Sinchon Campus.

The first two concerts were on October 27 and 28, provided by pianist Son Yeol-eum and violinist Lim Ji-young, who took first prize in the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition. The third, which took place November 4, featured the renowned mandolinist Avi Avital, who is known for his renditions of Baroque, modern classical, and folk music. The Grammy-nominated artist was warmly received by the audience for his unique and fascinating interpretations.

The French horn player Felix Klieser was originally scheduled to perform on November 10; however, due to an emergency situation, he was unable to appear. Instead, the pianist Kim Jae-won gave a solo performance. On November 15 and 16, musicians from the Yonsei College of Music and Tokyo University of the Arts played for audiences. This joint performance was designed to celebrate the close relationship between the two institutions.

Finally, on November 17 and 18, there were performances of “The World of Murakami Haruki—Classical Music, Jazz, and The Beatles.” In this unique show, the music found inside of Haruki’s novels is performed for audiences; both Korean and Japanese artists took part, including the actresses Son Sook and Kim So-hee and the pianist Cho Jae-hyuck.

The Yonsei Kumho Art Hall was built as part of the renovation of Baekyang-ro. The concert hall was designed to provide an intimate atmosphere, with 390 seats and state of the art acoustics. In the future, the Kumho Art Hall will continue to host concerts as well as a number of other campus-wide events.
