Yonsei selected its first Korea ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) female candidates. Jeong Hae-in (Nursing, Junior) and Kang Ji-yoon (Physical Education, Junior) finished a two-week training course at Army Cadet Military School in Gwoesan, North Chungcheong Province, to become initiated into the ROTC. Yonsei University started accepting applications from female students March 2011, and Jeong and Kang were selected as the final candidates last August beating a competition rate of 3:1. Jeong’s decision to apply for ROTC was greatly influenced by her father who has been serving as an officer in the navy for almost 30 years. She says that “I have grown up seeing my father as a marine and I had a yearning to be a soldier and even took classes related to security. I applied for ROTC last year when Yonsei was recruiting female candidates.” In regard to the future, she says, “The uniform still feels awkward, but I will train myself hard and be recognized for my competence.” Even Kang, who decided to have an active job since she was a high-school student, says, “I was interested in becoming a soldier and so I naturally applied for ROTC after getting to know about it in our university.” As for her goals, she says that “During the military training, cooperation with other people was new for me. However, I hope to become a bigger person who has comradeship for fellow soldiers and a sense of responsibility, and I also want to learn all the qualities that a soldier should have.” They will get 44 hours of training every semester for the next two years. After completing training sessions during summer and winter breaks, they will be commissioned as officers upon graduation in 2014 and serve the army for two years and four months after that. Yonsei University ROTC Director says, “It is meaningful that there are female students at our university with interests in security issues voluntarily choosing the path to becoming an officer.”
