Yonsei University was ranked number one among private universities in the 2011 Joongang Daily University Ranking. Public universities included, Yonsei ranked fourth. KAIST topped the list for four consecutive years and POSTECH and Seoul National University (SNU) ranked second and third, respectively. Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University both ranked fifth. It was especially notable that SNU (252 points) ranked higher than Yonsei (251 points) by only a single point. For this year’s evaluation, Joongang Daily assessed 100 four-year universities (93 universities last year). Rankings were based on total points (350 points) combined from four factors including educational environment (110 points), globalization (60 points), faculty research (110 points), and reputation (70 points). The Daily’s university evaluation team used an online system to receive data from schools. Analysis of research by professors in the 100 universities revealed that, among research papers whose main authors are Koreans and that were published in the international journals, 1,460 were in the top 1% when measured by the Science Citation Index. Of the 1,460, 245 (16.8%) were from SNU, 109 were from KAIST, 104 were from POSTECH, and 81 were from Yonsei, putting it in fourth place. Korea University and Sungkyunkwan University took fifth place.
