Yonsei University’s School of Medicine launched its Korea, China, and Japan Erasmus program for its students as its first step to cultivate leaders of the medical field in 21st century East Asia. 12 professors and staffs and 63 students of the School of Medicine were divided into two groups, and visited Shanghai Medical College at Fudan University and Peking Medical School from June 27th to July 1st. A group of six staff members with Professor Yoon Young Seol (neurosurgery) as the leader and the rest including professor Rah Seon Young (internal medicine) and professor Yang Eun Bae (medical education), and 34 students visited Fudan University’s Shanghai Medical College and spent time understanding the history and culture of China. The medical professors in Fudan University conducted lectures on China’s traditional medical practice of acupuncture, China’s healthcare system, the culture and Confucianism in China, and so on. Various group activities with Chinese students were also arranged. On the first day of their visit, discussions on the topic of the “network of Asia’s next generation” were conducted. The last day officially ended with professor Young Seol Yoon and Xiao Yuan, the vice president of Fudan’s Medical College, giving out certificates of completion of the Erasmus program to the students. During the same period, another group of six staff members led by professor Lee Myung Geun (Graduate School of Public Health) and the rest including professor Lee Seung Gu (radiology) and professor Lee Yu Mi (internal medicine) and 29 students visited Peking Medical School. The visiting group listened to lectures on the activities of international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the medical system at Peking Medical School, and its education system. In addition, through group activities and presentations on the question “What misconceptions do Chinese have about Korea?” they shared their opinions on the importance of better understanding of Chinese people and of having a global mindset.
