Specialist in medical law, Bruce Patsner (Baylor College of Medicine) has been appointed as professor of Yonsei Law School. This is the first case of such an expert in US medical law to become a faculty of a Law School in Korea. Professor Patsner has a unique background that includes experience in medicine and law. In 1979, due to an accident that injured his hand, Professor Patsner changed his course from medicine to law. He earned his PhD in Law at the Law School of UC Berkeley in 2003 and is currently a visiting scholar at University of Houston. He has conducted a number of studies on medical law and food and drug safety law, including around 100 articles on tumor detection and state-of-the-art surgical techniques. He also has working experience as chief medical officer at the Food and Drug Administration from 2003 to 2006. At Yonsei Law School, Professor Patsner teaches Bioethics and Medical Malpractice Law, which discuss controversial issues such as abortion, euthanasia, and medical malpractice. Professor Patsner also conducts research projects on female cancer at Severance Hospital. In an interview with the media on April 18th, Professor Patsner expressed his aspirations at Yonsei, “As professor of law and doctor myself, I would like to make advancements in the problem solving of medical law with Korean lawyers and doctors.” He pointed out that the area of medical law in Korea was less developed in comparison with Korea’s outstanding medical services. He added, “I am very honored and excited about my responsibility to nurture the first generation of lawyers in this field.” Professor Shin Hyon-yoon, Dean of Yonsei Law School, said, “His appointment as professor at Yonsei Law School will enhance Yonsei’s competitiveness in the field of medical law.”
