[YONSEI NEWS] : 51st Anniversary Celebration of Yonsei Korean Language Institute

The 51st anniversary of the Yonsei Korean Language Institute (Yonsei KLI) was celebrated at the Centennial Hall on May 19. There were many musical performances and activities, including those of both Korean and foreign traditional: Gilnori (Korean traditional pre-performance of music and dances before the main event), Pungmul (Korean traditional percussion band), Morin khuur performances (traditional Mongolian performances of bowed stringed instrument) and Chinese and Fiji traditional dance performances. Established in 1959 as the first Korean language institute in Korea, Yonsei KLI has provided education in Korean language and culture to more than 70,000 foreigners from 128 countries around the world. Around 6,600 foreign students from 75 countries study annually at Yonsei KLI. A few of the many who studied at Yonsei KLI include Kim Yong, President of Dartmouth University; Yang Woo-young, Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University; Jane Portal, curator of the Korean collections at the British Museum; Yoshimura Yasuo, Japanese consul in Korea; Ryoji Ito, Seoul Bureau Chief of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation); and Kevin O’Rourke, Professor at Kyung Hee University.
