Economic Crisis Scholarship Campaign “Despite the economic situation, we must not cease our effort to support qualified students. We must help out students survive this crisis.” Yonsei University initiated the nation’s effort to help students in the current economic crisis by calling for donations in the form of the Economic Crisis Scholarship Campaign, which asks for donations of 100,000 won. The campaign asks the Yonsei community, including faculty, staff and alumni, to donate 100,000 won each, which will be collected and distributed as scholarships for students in economic hardship. The initial campaign goal is 10,000 participants. Yonsei University gave out the largest amount in scholarships among Korean universities last year, with a total of 68.9 billion won. Calling for Voluntary Participation of Faculty, Staff, and Alumni On December 15, Yonsei University made the first of its efforts to help students out and to respond to social expectations by deciding to maintain tuition at the 2008 rate. In addition, strategies were devised on how to increase scholarships. The first result of this process is the scholarship campaign. The campaign is a part of University President Kim’s “Yonsei Vision”, which aims for servant leadership and warm-hearted elites, among other things. Warm-Hearted Elites and Servant Leadership The campaign was initiated by University President Kim, Alumni Association President Park Sam-Gu, Faculty Association President Choi Joong-Gil, and Trade Union President Park Sang-Wook. As part of the campaign, President Kim met with the U.S. divisions of the alumni association, with the New York branch promising support and many other branches showing interest. The New York branch has already collected 100 pledges. President Kim called for support from the entire community with these words: “Students should not have to discontinue their education due to the current economic depression. If members of our community all pitched in with 100,000 won each, we will be able to do a great deal for our students. I hope this campaign will be expanded to include other universities and the entire nation.”
