60th Anniversary of Yonhi and Severance Merger

-Pioneering Integrated Research in Biomedicine

January 5 marked the sixtieth anniversary of the merging of Yonhi College and Severance Medical College in 1957, which created today’s Yonsei University. Since then, Yonsei has established itself as the top private institution of higher education in Korea.

At the time of the merger, there were only six colleges (Liberal Arts, Business, Science, Politics and Law, Theology, and the Medical School) and a student body of 3,600. Today, Yonsei boasts four campuses with twenty-six different colleges and more than 27,000 students. There are also eighty-four graduate school departments training students in cutting edge research.

In particular, Yonsei remains known as an elite center for biomedical research, combining the spirit of basic research that characterized Yonhi College and the applied and clinical research of Severance. Yonsei is a national leader in the development of new drugs and medical technology, clinical and health research, and biological interdisciplinary studies thanks to the integrated research network that links Severance Medical School with the College of Life Science and Biotechnology, College of Engineering, College of Science, and a number of innovative research centers. One of these is the Yonsei-IBS Institute (Y-IBS), which is a world leader in integrated interdisciplinary research in nanomedicine.

Recently, Yonsei President Yong-Hak Kim highlighted the importance of “integrated biomedical research” in the university’s “Future Challenges 10 by 20.”
