“RC Creative Platform” : Students Suggesting Solutions for Local Problems
The Residential College (RC) Creative Platform is an innovative new program designed to empower Yonsei freshmen at the International Campus to create solutions for problems impacting the local community. Working in teams, students identify and research pressing issues in the community and then present their ideas for effectively addressing them. The RC Creative Platform was launched at the beginning of last semester, and its mission is to promote creative and integrated thinking, cooperative skills, problemsolving abilities, and servant leadership among RC students.
In its first run, more than 200 students formed forty-eight different teams, learning about problems in the local community and proposing innovative solutions to them. To support Creative Platform students, the RC offers special lectures, tea times, and in-depth mentoring. All told, thirty-one teams made final presentations on their topics and created posters, which were exhibited at the RC Creative Platform Fair.
From the fair, six teams were chosen as finalists, with the top prize going to “Card Capture Yonsei,” which developed an entry pass notification device. The second-place team, “Seiryeon,” suggested a public service program focused on the use of standard language. Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Jihyeon Lee, a member of Card Capture Yonsei, said of her team’s winning idea: “My bitter personal experience of frequently misplacing my dorm entrance card provided the fodder from which to develop our device. We will try to complete the device and introduce it more widely for daily use.”
