On May 13, the 138th anniversary of Yonsei University, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Biosystems Research Center of the College of Life Science and Biotechnology was held at the construction site behind the Science Research Center on the Sinchon Campus, Seoul, South Korea.

The groundbreaking ceremony was hosted by Professor Chung Meehyun, Dean of University Chaplaincy. Dean Kwang Chul Chung of the College of Life Science and Biotechnology said in the progress report, "Since its launch in 2008, the College of Life Science and Biotechnology has been preparing for new construction to steadily improve the quality of education and research by expanding spaces and improving facilities." He reported the construction progress from the first phase of the board's approval in December 2020 to today's groundbreaking ceremony.

"All members of the College of Life Science and Biotechnology and the College of Science have worked really hard to solve the difficulty of securing a dedicated space for the College of Life Science and Biotechnology through various constraints and numerous consultation processes," President Seoung Hwan Suh began the construction speech with words of encouragement. "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another," reciting Proverbs 27:17, President Suh emphasized, "I do not doubt that the cooperation of the College of Science will shine more through the College of Life Science and Biotechnology." He also recalled the meaning of the new building, saying, "The Biosystems Research Center will have its own strength in its role as a future research institute to respond to global challenges such as aging and cancer, a platform to respond to diseases, and a clinical trial base involving bio-industries."

Since its establishment in 2008, the College of Life Science and Biotechnology has been recognized for its excellence, despite a lack of educational and research space. It ranked first among Asian private universities in the field of life sciences in the 2022 QS World University Rankings 2022. In addition, it has achieved remarkable growth in research funding, technology transfers, and professors' start-ups. By establishing the Biosystems Research Center, the college will resolve the lack of space and leap forward to a higher level.

The Biosystems Research Center will be built on the rear side of the Science Research Center with two basement floors, six floors above ground, and about 6,600 square meters large. The construction is scheduled to be completed by May 2025.
