On May 11, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, awarded an honorary doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering to Professor Kohei Itoh, President of Keio University in Japan. The conferment ceremony was held at the Chang Ki Won International Conference Hall on the 7th floor of the Yonsei-Samsung Library.

Yonsei University has decided to award an honorary doctorate in recognition of President Itoh's achievements as an engineer and president of Keio University, his contribution to academic development, including materials science and engineering, and his dedicated social contribution.

After graduating from Keio University, President Itoh received a Ph.D. in Engineering from UC Berkeley. He joined Keio as a faculty member in 1995 and became a full professor in 2007. His main focus of research has been quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum physics, which led to more than 330 journal publications. He is one of 210 Council Members of the Science Council of Japan, representing approximately 870,000 scholars in the country to propose and advise academic and scientific policies in Japan. He has served on numerous executive boards, including the Physical Society of Japan and the Japan Society of Applied Physics.

President Itoh leads a variety of quantum information projects in Japan as the Program Director of Quantum Information Technology in the MEXT Quantum Leap Flagship Program for researchers representing the field and as the Chairperson for the expert panel on Quantum Technology Innovation for the government of Japan. He is a recipient of the Japan IBM Prize and the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Prize. he is also a founder of the IBM Quantum Computer Network Hub at Keio University.

"President Kohei Itoh is a pioneer in Japanese quantum computer research, and his research played an important role in expanding the boundaries of knowledge, gaining international recognition, and having a clear impact on academia," said President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University, "Yonsei University has decided to award an honorary Ph.D. in recognition of President Itoh's outstanding contribution to research and education, leadership at Keio University, and his influence on society."

"I recommend granting an honorary degree of Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering to President Kohei Itoh, who has contributed to the development of science and technology and university education through leading academic research," Professor Seung Han Park, Yonsei University's Vice President for Research Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School said in his commendation, "President Itoh is contributing to the development of education and research between Yonsei and Keio universities and fostering of future global talent, by striving to establish an active relationship for continuous human exchange and academic development between the two universities."

President Kohei Itoh of Keio University said in his replying address, "It is an honor to receive an honorary doctorate from Yonsei University, which represents South Korea, and I will continue to make more efforts for academic exchange and cooperation between Yonsei and Keio universities."
