Global university committed to creating a sustainable future of mankind


On May 13, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, held a ceremony to celebrate its 138th anniversary at the Concert Hall in the Centennial Hall. The ceremony was attended by Chairman Hur Dong-soo of the Yonsei University Education Foundation (Honorary Chairman of GS Caltex), President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University, and President Kyung-sun Yu of the Yonsei Alumni Association.



"Our school was founded 138 years ago, upon the dedication and unceasing efforts of Missionaries Underwood and Allen. Now, Yonsei has become a global university committed to creating a sustainable future for mankind and pioneering in the fields of education, R&D and social engagement," said President Suh in his commemorative address, "We face a period of uncertainty. More than ever in this post-Covid-19-era, it is difficult to predict the future," adding, "In this post-Covid-19-era, Yonsei will actively embrace the challenges of becoming a global leader, rather than be a mere follower of the generational trends."


Various award ceremonies were also held at the ceremony. The Yonsei Awards for Enterpriser went to start-up founders, including Professor Sohn Il of the College of Engineering, who is the CEO of RD Solution (Professor Category), Professor Seung Soo Chung, of the College of Medicine, who is the CEO of BnH Research (Professor Category), Shin Dong-ik, CEO of Mound Media (Alumni Category), and Seyoung Lee, CEO of Wrtn Technologies (Student Category). The Yonsei Awards for Medicine went to Professor Young Nyun Park of the College of Medicine (Academic Category) and Professor John A. Linton (Ihn Yohan) of the College of Medicine (Community Service Category).



The Yonsei Research Awards were given to Professor Song Min of the College of Liberal Arts (Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts and Physical Education Category), Professor Kim Jong Hak of the College of Engineering (Science and Engineering Category), and Professor Eun Cheol Park of the College of Medicine (Medical and Bio Category). The Long-term Service Awards went to professors and staff who worked for 10 years (367 people), 20 years (186 people), 30 years (242 people), and 40 years (20 people).



Yonsei University's "Yonsei Fellowship (Yonsei World-Class Scholar Fostering Program)" was established this year, and is given to the professors who are leading researchers in each major field, contributing greatly to Yonsei's international research competitiveness and are outstanding in all aspects as professors, including undergraduate education. The "Yonsei Lee Youn Jae Fellowship Awards" are run by donations from Chairman Lee Youn Jae, CEO and Founder of Zinus. The first winners were Professor Kim Sang-Woo of the College of Engineering (World-Class Fellow), Professors Yoo Hwidong and Kim Jhoon of the College of Science (Fellow), Professors Park Jong Hyeok, Ahn Jong-Hyun, and Kim Sang-Hyoun of the College of Engineering (Fellow), Professor Cho Seung Woo of the College of Life Science and Biotechnology (Fellow), Professor Cho Sung-Bae of the College of Computing (Fellow), Professor Hong Sounman of the College of Social Sciences (Fellow), Professor Kim Hyongbum of the College of Medicine (Fellow), Professor Choi Sangyup of the College of Commerce and Economics (Rising Fellow), Professor Choi Young-Pil of the Collge of Science (Rising Fellow), Professor Kim Hye Ryun of the College of Medicine (Rising Fellow), Professor Choi Junjeong of the College of Pharmacy (Rising Fellow), and Professor Lee Sang Soo of the College of Science and Technology Convergence (Rising Fellow).



In addition, the "Golden Citations Awards (Best Cited Researcher Awards)" were newly introduced to strengthen awards for the best researchers who have shown influential research results worldwide. The awards are given to professors who have recorded more than 1,000 citations for a single paper and are operated with donations from Chairman Lee Youn Jae, CEO and Founder of Zinus. Professors Shin Injae, Im Seongil, Cheon Jinwoo, and Tae Jinsung of the College of Science, Professors Kang Moon Gi and Park Cheolmin of the College of Engineering, Professors Park Hae Jeong, Yong Dong Eun, and Huh Yong Min of the College of Medicine received the awards.


Along with the 138th anniversary of its foundation, Yonsei University held related events such as a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Biosystems Research Center (College of Life Science and Biotechnology), a groundbreaking ceremony for the Engineering Hall 5, and an alumni reunion.
