Yonsei Delegation for Model United Nations (YDMUN) Participates in NMUN 2023 and Wins Second Place

Selected as "Distinguished Delegation"

The Yonsei Delegation for Model United Nations (YDMUN), an autonomous student organization under the Leadership Center of the Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE), participated in the National Model United Nations (NMUN) held in New York, the United States, and was selected as the second place, the "Distinguished Delegation."

NMUN is the world's largest and most prestigious international model United Nations conference with a 70-year tradition and is a general meeting where university students from all over the world gather to discuss global issues and draw up resolutions following UN procedures. This year's NMUN was held five days, from April 2 to 6, in the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel and the UN Headquarters in New York. YDMUN is the only Korean team officially approved by the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and has participated in the NMUN every year since 2007, achieving excellent results. This year's selection of the Distinguished Delegation is the best performance in the group award category since 2015. It is all the more meaningful since this time's participation was made by a small number of eight.

Students of the 19th YDMUN were designated as Tunisian ambassadors this year. They participated in six committees, including ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council), UNEA (UN Environment Assembly), UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), ECA (UN Economic Commission for Africa), UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency), and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). All members of the YDMUN led in-depth discussions in each committee, and all succeeded in passing the resolution by taking the role of the sponsor (main author of the resolution). In particular, the members were enthusiastic and inclusive within each committee, receiving positive reviews from fellow committee members and chairpersons.

After receiving the award, YDMUN members participated in the closing ceremony at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters and shouted the Akaraka chant.

"YDMUN has shown international inclusion and skills as the representatives of South Korea, and I am proud that Yonsei University has proven to be an excellent global talent university," said Professor Shinki An, Chairman of IGEE and Director of the Leadership Center, "YDMUN's achievement is like a "turning point" that energizes international exchanges that have been depressed by the pandemic. We look forward to YDMUN's vigorous activities as a global student autonomous organization representing South Korea and Yonsei University in the future."

"I am proud that my alma mater juniors actively and passionately interacted with the world as the Korean representatives and gained sympathy by communicating with confidence, despite the small number of members," said Hwang Seong-taek, chairman of the scholarship committee of "Baekhyeonjae," a group of Yonsei alumni business people that supported and sponsored YDMUN's participation in NMUN, "I was overwhelmed by the news that Yonsei's Akaraka chant rang out in the world."

"I am happy that YDMUN has performed well on the global stage," said Jang Jeong-ryeol, chairman of Baekheonjae, "We look forward to YDMUN's active activities and future growth of global Yonsei University talents."

YDMUN plans to hold the Yonsei Model United Nations (YMUN) and recruit new members to participate in the NMUN 2024 together as a representative of South Korea in early May. We look forward to seeing YDMUN's future global activities and growth.
