Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, is the first Korean university to establish a convergence-intensive program centered on artificial intelligence (AI) education to provide students with convergence education customized for each major.
Yonsei University’s newly established "AI Convergence Intensive Major" is an AI and software education program tailored to each major that provides AI core subjects and AI convergence major subjects to various majors. The purpose is to cultivate core convergence talents with AI literacy and data science utilization ability.
Not only is AI expanding its economic and social influence, but it has already entered deep into the realm of creation, such as paintings, music, and literature, which were considered unique areas of human beings. In order to effectively utilize such AI, the convergence of major knowledge in each field and AI technology is essential.
Since 2022, the first year of its launch, the College of Computing of Yonsei University has been teaching and researching ways to utilize AI in the fields of management and resource management by piloting convergence-intensive majors with some departments of the College of Business and the College of Engineering. In 2023, the scope of convergence and cooperation will be expanded to 20 majors from 11 colleges, including liberal arts, social sciences, science and engineering, and medical fields. Yonsei University aims to provide AI convergence education in all majors by continuously expanding the scope and educational model of participating majors.
The "AI Convergence Intensive Major" is an educational model developed from Yonsei University's convergence intensive major system, which is a student-centered AI convergence education program that can support various majors and AI technology convergence capabilities. The program provides basic AI technology education to apply a wide range of AI knowledge and technology to each major field. Courses will be opened to help students develop their problem-solving skills by trying to solve actual problems using AI technology in each area.
Yonsei University said it decided to establish such a system because it decided that talented people with AI utilization and AI-based problem-solving skills were essential in all academic areas, including liberal arts, social sciences, economics, and medicine.
Dean Hojung Cha of the College of Computing said, "The AI Convergence Intensive Major Program is Yonsei University's unique educational model for fostering AI convergence talents and will not only serve as the cornerstone of AI convergence research in university but also will enable AI convergence talent education in a form specialized in domain knowledge." -
