More than 400 faculty and staff attended, pledging a bold challenge toward the world's top-class university

"In the 2023 New Year, please let Yonsei shine the light of truth in the world and create a new history under the flag of freedom. Let us also cherish and carry out the mission given to Yonsei with honor and courage, spotless in the sight of heaven."
- from "Prayer for Yonsei" -

On the morning of the new year, with the sun of hope risen, the Yonsei family gathered together and had a special time to start the new year together.

On January 2, the "2023 Yonsei Faculty and Staff New Year's Celebration" was held at the Concert Hall in Centennial Hall. More than 400 faculty and staff members, including President Seoung Hwan Suh, attended the first face-to-face New Year's celebration held in three years due to COVID-19. Participants began a hopeful new year in 2023, pledging Yonsei's great challenge toward truth and freedom.

Even before the event began, the entrance to the Concert Hall was crowded with faculty members attending the event. The long line of participants shook hands with each other in hopes of a happy New Year, creating a warm scene to share the strong affection of the Yonsei community.

The New Year's greetings, which began with the prelude of Professor Cho Sung Yun (Department of Church Music), were held in a reverent atmosphere. Participants sang hymns together in one voice and read "Prayer for Yonsei" to strengthen their determination for Yonsei's new leap forward.

"We saw tremendous achievements in the past year through the joint efforts of all Yonsei members, and we have many events for which to give thanks and celebrate," President Suh said in his address, "I attribute this brilliant feat to the hard work of all Yonsei members, who have devoted themselves to the accomplishment of our shared vision despite the obstacles of COVID-19."

"2023 must be a starting point for Yonsei," he added, "We must unite our capabilities to meet this grand challenge, and we will begin with Project Y. The creation of the Institute for Project Y (IPY), which will generalize the school’s outstanding transdisciplinary research, will strengthen Yonsei’s research capacity in that area."

"Our race for the title of the world’s best university should begin today, not tomorrow," he said, "Envisioning the future of Yonsei as far more radiant than the stars, I wish you Godspeed. May the Lord guide you through this new year."

Professor Yoo Yungwook (Department of Piano) and Professor Cho Sung Hyun (Department of Instrumental Music) set up a special stage at the event. Two professors, one of Korea's leading pianists and flutists, played "C. Chaminade: Concertino Op.107 for Flute and Piano" to give the audience a beautiful melody.

After the New Year's Celebration event, participants had time to share New Year's blessings while eating tteokguk (sliced rice cake soup) at the Grand Ballroom in the Commons.

● Prayer for Yonsei
God, the Creator of all life,
To celebrate the new year, all members of Yonsei stand before You with renewed hearts and resolutions. Please lead us in the right path with Your goodness.

Jesus Christ, our Healer and Savior,
Many of Your creatures are suffering through great conflicts and disputes. Please show Your mercy upon them, restore them with the light of grace so that they can move toward their goal.

Holy Spirit, our God of reconciliation and peace,
Please bind us in love. Let us be united and work together for the good of all.

God, the one true Master of Yonsei,
You sent pioneers such as Allen, Underwood, and Avison to this land and established Yonsei in it. Let us inherit the founding spirit based on God's love and let Yonsei be recognized globally.

God, who called us as part of the Yonsei community,
Please let Yonsei consider the weak by reaching out to them, and let us encourage each other.

God, who called us to be disciples of Jesus Christ,
We stand here in response to Your calling. Let our education and research be devoted to solving the imminent problems that humanity is faced with.

In the 2023 New Year, please let Yonsei shine the light of truth in the world and create a new history under the flag of freedom. Let us also cherish and carry out the mission given to Yonsei with honor and courage, spotless in the sight of heaven. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
