On November 9, the Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University held a "GEEF for ALL 2022 Series IV" special seminar under the theme of "Demographic Diversity in a World of 8 Billion" in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The event began with the opening speech by Professor Young-Ryeol Park, Chairman of IGEE, and introducing the speaker by Professor Song In Han, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services and Director of the Ban Ki-moon Center for International Cooperation at IGEE. Then, Ms. Diene Keita, Deputy Executive Director, Programme, of UNFPA, participated as the speaker and conducted a presentation and a Q&A session with the audience based on her experience in the United Nations system of more than 30 years.

Deputy Executive Director Keita of UNFPA explained the demographic diversity of the world's 8 billion people, namely, demographic resilience through stable and ideal population size, aging labor market changes, effective response to social security systems, and birth rate policies.

The event was held through mutual cooperation between the IGEE Leadership Center, the UNFPA Seoul Representational Office, and the YDMUN, a model United Nations club at Yonsei University.  In addition, various participants, including Andrew Billo, a humanitarian financing and partnerships specialist at UNFPA, Michael Herrmann, a senior adviser on economics and demography, and Yonsei professors, staff, and students participated in comprehensive and in-depth Q&A sessions on demographic issues caused by global environmental changes.

The UNFPA Seoul Representational Office is located in Underwood Hall on the Yonsei Sinchon Campus under a memorandum with Yonsei University in February 2019 and is working with various South Korea government ministries, cooperative agencies, public and private institutions to carry out projects related to the creation of an international development cooperation ecosystem in the field of population development, including aging and low birth rates, gender-based health and management, and protection from gender-based violence in the humanitarian crisis.

Yonsei University is making efforts to strengthen the university's social responsibility by fostering "innovative leaders with a community spirit" under the core values of "engagement, innovation, and excellence." In particular, the IGEE, established in 2017, holds the international-scale Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF) in February every year to raise global awareness of the importance of sustainable development.

The GEEF for ALL Special Seminars, which are being held in the series, is designed to draw continuous participation and interest from the international community by delivering more innovative messages through the GEEF platform. Since the first seminar on May 10, 2021, under the theme of "Human Rights and Peace of Myanmar," the series has consistently drawn various discourses to achieve the international community's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
