Jumping 73 Places from Last Year to Record the Highest-Ever Ranking

Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, ranked 78th in the world in the THE World University Rankings 2023 released by the global university evaluation agency THE (The Times Higher Education) on October 12. This is a 73-notch jump from last year.

Yonsei University, which recorded its all-time highest ranking in history last year, achieved the feat of "topping the Asian private universities" by once again breaking its record with "quantum jumps" in this year's announcement. Yonsei has been on the continuous rise for seven years since 2015 and has risen matchlessly amid the drops in the rankings of major domestic universities in Korea. As a result, Yonsei's domestic rank has also risen two notches to second place.

Yonsei University's achievement of ranking 78th in the THE rankings is excellent news following its 73rd place in the latest QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings in June. QS, along with THE, is known as one of the most trusted global university evaluation agencies. As Yonsei ranked within the top 80 in both THE and QS world rankings and second in last year's JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings, Yonsei's leading position of private universities in Korea solidified in both domestic and international evaluations.

The THE evaluates universities around the world based on five indicators: ▲Teaching (30%), ▲Research (30%), ▲Citations (30%), ▲International outlook (7.5%), and ▲Industry income (2.5%) and announces the rankings every year. This year, 1,799 universities around the world were evaluated.

Yonsei's overall ranking jumped as its ranking rose steeply by 44 steps in teaching, 33 steps in research, and 67 steps in citations. The rank in industry income rose only one notch from last year, but it remains the world's highest level within the top 50. In particular, it is all the more meaningful in that the FWCI (Field Weighted Citation Index), a citation index considering the academic field, has been rising every year; efforts to improve the quality of research have paid off.

Reinforcement of Curricula Leading to Future Social Change

Yonsei University is actively supporting classes centered on free discussion and knowledge sharing to foster hybrid talent required by the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Through the micro major system, convergence education is provided to learn core knowledge of various majors. Starting in 2022, first-year students are required to take classes in the "information and technology" area, and convergence education in cutting-edge fields such as digital humanities and big data using artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) are supported. Yonsei is making significant efforts to secure students' digital literacy by operating extracurricular programs on realistic media, metaverse, and content writing and opening courses on data analysis, coding, and media production for all students.

Meanwhile, Yonsei University, which established the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 and produces 50 masters and doctors every year, has newly established the "College of Computing" this year and recruits undergraduate students for the Department of Artificial Intelligence, aiming to foster high-quality AI talents and lead the era of human-centered AI through AI convergence education and research. In this way, Yonsei plans to lay the foundation for fostering consumer-centered AI convergence personnel, provide advanced education that combines various and rich AI application studies such as engineering, humanities, social science, law, business administration, and medicine, and expand the opening of AI convergence courses for all students.

Diverse Supports for World-Class Research Results

Yonsei University is striving to improve research excellence by training world-class researchers, establishing global knowledge networks, and advancing the research support system.

Since 2021, the "Yonsei Signature Research Cluster Program" has been introduced to actively support world-class on-campus researchers, striving to foster Yonsei's representative research fields. To strengthen research competitiveness, special support programs customized for each researcher in all research cycles are also operated to enhance research commitment.

In order to improve the quality of world-class research and promote international cooperative research, the "Yonsei Frontier Lab" has been established to support international joint research with excellent overseas researchers systematically. It promotes long-term research cooperation by re-supporting new and existing invited researchers, has signed a strategic partnership with the world's leading research-oriented universities, and is finding new joint research teams through the diversification of partner countries.

Meanwhile, Yonsei University is creating an innovative ecosystem within the International Campus that presents a successful cooperative model of university-centered "university-research-industry-hospital" collaboration. As a result, Yonsei continuously won several government projects, including the "Makerspace Establishment and Operation Project" by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (May 2020), "Industry-University-Research Cooperation Complex in University Development Project" by the Ministry of Education (June 2020), "Korean-NIBRT Program Operation and BioProcess Human Resources Development Center Project" by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Health and Welfare (October 2020), and "K-Bio Lab Hub Establishment Project" (July 2021).

Yonsei University plans to continue its upward trend by strengthening research competitiveness, such as finding and attracting excellent researchers and supporting promising fields in the future, and to continue to return Yonsei's education and research results to society under the value of "engagement."
