Yonsei CARIFS Co-Holds a International Peace Conference with Swiss Embassy and KOSSREC

"Korea and Switzerland: Comparative Approach to Peace and Security"


On September 20, the Center for Advanced Research in Integrated Future Society (CARIFS) at Yonsei University held an international peace conference jointly with the Embassy of Switzerland in the Republic of Korea and the Korean Social Science Research Council (KOSSREC), with the help of the Social Sciences Korea (SSK) Support Group and the auspice National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). The conference's theme was "Korea and Switzerland: Comparative Approach to Peace and Security."



The conference began with the opening and welcome from Professor Sangtu Ko, Director of the CARIFS, Ambassador Dagmar Schmidt Tartagli, the Swiss Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, and Professor Young Ryeol Park, President of the KOSSREC.



With Professor Yeon Ho Lee from the Department of Political Science and International Studies at Yonsei University as the session's chair, presenters from Switzerland presented under the theme of "Swiss Contribution to Global and European Peace" in the first session. Professor Laurent Goetschel at the University of Basel presented "Swiss and European Approaches to Peace and Security," Director Isabel Prinzing at Swisspeace presented "The Role of Civil Society in Peacebuilding," and Ambassador Tartagli presented "Neutrality: Always Discussed, but Still Successful."



In the second session, with Professor Taehwan Kim at Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) as the chair, Korean participants presented under the theme of "Peace and Unification on the Korean Peninsula." Research Fellow Seong Woo Yi at Gyeonggi Research Institute presented "Dynamics of Inter-Korean Relationship with the Korean Peace Index: 1979-2022," Dr. Seung Hyun Lee at the National Assembly Research Service presented "A Review on Korean Peninsula Integration Initiative: Logic and Improvement of National Community Unification Formula," and Professor Young Ho Kim at Korea National Defense University presented "The U.S.-China Rivalry and S. Korean Foreign Security Strategy: A Menu for Choice."



Discussants of the two sessions were Dr. Sung Eun Shim at the National Assembly Research Service, Research Professors Geeyoung Hong, and Inchoon Kim at the Institute of East and West Studies (IEWS) of Yonsei University, Professor Jean Young Lee at Inha University, and Professor Sangtu Ko at Yonsei University. In addition to the discussants, the audience participated in asking questions, which led to lively discussions throughout the conference.

Through this conference, the two countries shared their perceptions and experiences of peace and security based on various perspectives. It was an opportunity for South Korea to make more constructive cooperative diplomacy at the United Nations Security Council with Switzerland, which makes multiple contributions to resolving international disputes.
