"The Global Food Security Crisis Should Not Be Dismissed as a Problem for Others"

Special Lecture by Director Yun Hsun-Hee of WFP Seoul Global Office

On July 7, the Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University held a special GEEF for ALL series special seminar under the theme of "Global Food Insecurity and Insight from WFP."

The event began with introducing the speaker by Professor Song In Han, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services and Director of the Ban Ki-moon Center for International Cooperation at IGEE. Director Yun Hsun-Hee of WFP (World Food Programme)'s Seoul Global Office participated as the speaker to present and answer questions.

Professor Song In Han's Introduction to the Speaker

Director Yun diagnosed the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian War and prolonged global food security crisis and said that everyone should remember the help from the international community when South Korea was the poorest country and participate together in ending hunger around the world.

She also emphasized the seriousness of rising costs for humanitarian aid due to increased hunger and war-driven inflation. Director Yun finally wrapped up the presentation by urging a sense of community with the message that "starvation is not just another person's problem."

Various members of the Yonsei community, including professors, staff, and students, participated in the seminar, which was held in English online and offline, showing deep interest in this topic through heated discussions.

The GEEF for ALL Special Seminars, which are being held under the theme of "sustainable development," has been steadily drawing various discourses to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the international community since the first seminar held on May 10 last year under the theme of "Human Rights and Peace in Myanmar."

Yonsei University is making efforts to strengthen the university's social responsibility by fostering "innovative leaders with a community spirit" under the core values of "engagement, innovation, and excellence." In particular, the IGEE, established in 2017, holds the international-scale Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF) in February every year to raise global awareness of the importance of sustainable development.

"GEEF for ALL" is designed to deliver more innovative messages through the GEEF platform to attract continued participation and interest from the international community and will be held continuously to seek various problems and solutions from the international community.
