Yonsei Law School Team Wins International Commercial Arbitration Competition

Winning the Championship, Best Written Award, and Best Defense Award

On February 19, the Yonsei Law School students team won the triple crown at the 12th The Willem Vis Pre-Moot International Commercial Arbitration Competition, which was held online. The Yonsei Law School team not only won the Championship and the Submission of High Quality but also enjoyed the honor of the leader Hyewon Yoon being selected for the Best Oralist in the finals.

The competition was co-hosted by Seoul National University Asia-Pacific Law Institute, KCAB International, and the Korean Council for International Arbitration (KOCIA) and sponsored by major domestic law firms in South Korea such as Bae, Kim & Lee, Lee & Ko, Shin & Kim, Yoon & Yang, Jipyong, HMP, KCL, Peter & Kim, Apex, and Kim & Chang. Thirty-four teams, the largest ever, participated from worldwide, including Tsinghua University, Waseda University, and the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law; and only eight teams advanced to the finals after the fierce written screening.

Due to COVID-19, all rounds were conducted with virtual hearing following last year. In the final match between Yonsei and Handong Global University, the arbitral tribunal consisted of attorneys John Rhie, the managing partner of Quinn Emanuel Hong Kong office, David MacArthur, a co-head of international arbitration at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, and Kyongwha Chung of Covington & Burling, participated virtually from Hong Kong, Tokyo, and New York, respectively.

"The winning Yonsei team and Ms. Yoon were well deserving of the win and best orator prize. I believe and expect the team to compete at the highest level at the Vis Moot competition." Attorney John Rhie said, "It's wonderful to see the preparation regardless of nationality and how the participants were interested in international arbitration which is universal. It's also very interesting to see how the standard has gone up exponentially over the years." In particular, he praised the Yonsei Law School team and student Hyewon Yoon for making a defense worthy of the trophy.

Attorney David MacArthur also commented, "the session was a hot bench, and the arbitrators asked some fairly challenging questions but everybody responded to that quite well."

The International Commercial Arbitration Competition is held every February. It has established itself as an annual event of the arbitration community, with international arbitration-related institutions and practitioners, scholars, and future legal professionals in South Korea. It aims to foster future international commercial arbitration experts by conducting all procedures in English and vividly experiencing international commercial arbitration procedures and processes.
