Orientation and Sunrise Festival for 2022 First-Year Students
Orientation and Sunrise Festival for 2022 First-Year Students

First Face-To-Face Gathering Held in Three Years

On March 18 and 19, Yonsei University held an orientation for the 2022 first-year students and the "Haeoreumje (Sunrise Festival)" at the General Education Hall on the International Campus, Incheon.

The Sunrise Festival is a student autonomy event that marks the beginning of the spring semester and wishes for the well-being of the year. This year's festival was a little more special, including the 2022 Freshmen Orientation event, which was canceled in February due to the spread of COVID-19.

Organized by student groups such as the General Student Council Emergency Committee, the General Club Association Emergency Committee, the Cheering Squad, and the rock band Sonagi, this was the first face-to-face orientation gathering held in three years since 2019. The number of participants was dispersed by dividing it into three times for two days, and up to 150 participants per session were limited under strict quarantine rules.

The event consisted of three parts. Through fruitful programs such as introducing the General Student Council and annual university events, quizzes, introducing the General Club Association, club performances, Sonagi's performances, and the cheering orientation, first-year students were given time to experience the Yonsei culture.

Only students who checked the self-diagnosis kit "negative" on the event day were allowed to enter. Even after entering, they thoroughly followed quarantine rules such as sitting in designated seats and wearing masks. In addition, cheering sticks and clapping sounds were used instead of cheering with voices. Students who could not attend the face-to-face event due to the limited number of people could participate in the third event held on Saturday through real-time streaming of the General Student Council's YouTube channel.

As the COVID-19 situation continued for more than two years, there were also difficulties in students' autonomous activities. We hope that the holding of this year's Sunrise Festival will revitalize the student council and club culture and help students who are entering the new semester.
