The Place to Share the Final Achievements of Students Who Take Care of Our Surroundings


On January 7, 2022, the Institute for Higher Education Innovation (IHEI) of Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea hosted the "2021 IHEI Show-off Festa II" to showcase the results of the efforts of participant groups of the institute’s co-curricular program (Workstation) that have carried out various projects to bring solutions to social issues throughout 2021.


Since the 2021 IHEI Workstation Partnership Agreement Ceremony held on May 10, 2021, the institute provided administrative and financial support for a total of 769 Yonsei students across 178 teams working under seven main categories with the common mission to create social values. The "2021 IHEI Show-off Festa II" was held to share the achievements of 2021 Workstations that have been striving to create social values in various ways and to encourage their efforts.


Following the "Show-off Festa I" held last summer, the Workstation projects presented in this event were also uploaded on the online platform "Social Innovation Town," (https://festa.iheitown-yonsei.net/) where Workstation groups could share and spread the social innovation activities, and mutual evaluations were conducted among the groups as well. Additionally, efforts were made to expand the exposure of the Workstation projects by including youth mentees participating in community mentoring programs and undergraduates and graduate students participating as student mentors at Yonsei in the viewing and evaluation of Workstations' social innovation activities.


Through the "Festa II," students proposed their original approaches to solving social problems despite the difficulties caused by the continued spread of COVID-19, as well as their experiences of encouraging teenagers to carry out various activities to solve social problems independently beyond the boundaries of universities.



The "WoodenBricks," the team nominated for the "Team Impact Award" from the event, is a Workstation that produces eco-friendly sidewalk blocks using waste wood, striving to solve the cost and environmental problems caused by waste wood treatment and existing concrete sidewalk blocks. The WoodenBricks has been producing prototypes of various sidewalk blocks suitable for use while being an active participant in networking activities among the Workstations throughout the year.


The "Dallaon," another team nominated for the award, consists of Yonsei students who have completed the curricular program offered by the IHEI. The Workstation is carrying out activities to support small business owners and enhance the values of local regions by producing subscription boxes with a specific regional theme. The Workstation embarked on its social innovation projects with youths since the second half of 2021, receiving recognitions for its potential from within and outside Yonsei.


Meanwhile, alumni Kim Jiyoung (German Language and Literature), Park Yeji (Education), and Seo Sangwoo (Mechanical Engineering), who are currently leading their social ventures that began as a Workstations, participated in the event as mentors to share their concerns and experiences as "freshmen CEOs" for students aspiring to start their own social ventures.


Lastly, a session to introduce the volunteering activities of Jang Hyuk-joo (Medicine) was held. Hyuk-joo has made contributions to the community in various ways while assuming the role of the president of the College of Medicine's student council. He has recently received a volunteer certification medal from the IHEI for conducting more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work, for which he commented that "Volunteer work have been the driving force behind my studies at Yonsei."


"I would like to send messages of congratulations and encouragement to the students who participated in the move to change our society meaningfully despite the prolonged situation of COVID-19," said Professor Yong Suk Jang, Dean of IHEI, while delivering a message of support to the students.


With the "2021 IHEI Show-off Festa II," IHEI concludes its 2021 Workstation Support Project, and the institute plans to recruit new Workstations in the first half of the 2022 school year to continue supporting students' projects to develop a driving force for social innovation in higher education.
