Joy of Christmas to All around the World
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. At 5 PM on December 7, the “Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony” was held in front of the statue of H.G. Underwood on the Sinchon Campus in Seoul to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus. The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, which began in 1991 and marks its 30th anniversary this year, has become a proud annual event that makes Christmas more meaningful for Yonsei University, which was established in the Christian spirit.
At the lighting ceremony, numerous Yonseians, including President Seoung Hwan Suh, faculty members, and enrolled students, gathered to share the joy of Christmas. At the event hosted by Chaplain Dae Sung Lee, Dean of University Chaplaincy, Yonseians read the Bible verses together with their hearts and sang hymns, "Silent Night, Holy Night" and "The First Noel."
Participants, including the President, Senior Vice Presidents, and the general student council leaders, reached out to the switches on the podium and turned on the Christmas tree in unison. Yonseians burst into cheers and enjoyed the Christmas atmosphere when the lights were lit brightly on the tree decorated with various lights and decorations.
President Suh said in a congratulatory message, "We feel joy every time we turn on the Christmas tree, but this year we have another feeling to celebrate the 30th anniversary," he added, "As we turn on the Christmas tree and see the sparkling lights on the tree today, we feel like another hope is rising. I hope you wrap up this year healthy and have a more powerful and blessed new year.”
After the ceremony, Yonseians gathered in twos and threes under the bright Christmas tree lights to take pictures, enjoyed the carol performance by a brass ensemble of the College of Music students, and shared bread prepared by the Office of General Affairs.
