On October 25, Yonsei University in South Korea announced its plan to establish the IBM Quantum Computing Data Center through collaboration with IBM. Once the data center is established at the Yonsei Science Park (YSP), which is planned to be built on the Yonsei International Campus, South Korea will become the fourth country in the world to have the IBM Quantum System One installed, after the United States, Germany, and Japan.

Under the new partnership, Yonsei University and IBM plan to work together for quantum computing research, including academic research on quantum computing, software development for quantum computing utilization, and provision of necessary quantum computing resources for industries.

In addition, Yonsei plans to serve as the IBM Quantum Hub that connects domestic industry-academic research institutes and will strive to create a quantum computing ecosystem for collaboration with leading organizations interested in quantum computing research such as enterprises, universities, research institutes, medical institutions, startups, and government agencies.

Through this, the capacities for domestic quantum computing research·education, and application development for quantum computing utilization are expected to be strengthened. Ultimately, following the success South Korea has achieved in the semiconductor, electronics, and automotive technology industries, the following collaboration provides an optimal opportunity to develop and foster next-generation national quantum technology capabilities.

"I believe that quantum computing is the next-generation technology that can bring a breakthrough to the high-tech material and bio-technology industries," said President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University. "Yonsei University, which has the largest medical network and research manpower in Korea, expects to be able to create synergy in research and education based on quantum computing through collaboration with IBM."

"IBM is committed to the belief that growth of the global quantum ecosystem and open access to the technology is critical to accelerating scientific and business development and utilization of quantum computing," stated Won Sung-shik, General Manager of IBM Korea. "South Korea has been prominent in various industries and research fields, including bio and medical services, as well as manufacturing and financial industries. The collaboration between IBM and Yonsei to attract quantum computing systems will help to enhance this national competitiveness."

With the following collaboration, Yonsei University will join the IBM Quantum Network, a global community of 170 member companies including Fortune 500 companies, startups, academic institutions, and research institutes. The IBM Quantum Network teams engage in collaborative research to study how quantum computing can be utilized in various industries and fields, including finance, energy, chemistry, material science, optimization, and machine learning. In South Korea, Sungkyunkwan University, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, and KAIST are currently working together with IBM for quantum computing research. Yonsei University and IBM plan to work together to further expand the domestic quantum computing ecosystem.
