The 21st Underwood Missionary Award Ceremony is Held

Missionaries Hyun Kwang Shin, Se-Kwan Oh, and Soon-young Jung as Award Recipients

On October 12, the Underwood Memorial Association held the ceremony for the 21st Underwood Missionary Award. In consideration of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the award ceremony was carried out through an online broadcast. Video clips of the awards ceremony can be found on the website of the Yonsei University Office of Chaplain as well as its YouTube channel.

The Underwood Missionary Award has been awarded since 2001 to honor the spirit of dedication and service across areas of education, medicine, and Christian faith of the founder of Yonsei University, Revenant Horace Grant Underwood. It awards missionaries who are dedicated to missionary work overseas in areas where missionary work is challenging. Missionaries Hyun Kwang Shin, Se-Kwan Oh, and Soon-young Jung were selected as the recipients of the award this year.

"This ceremony, held on October 12, the anniversary of Revenant Underwood's death, holds more significance than any other event on our campus," said President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University in his commemorative speech. "This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Ms. Lillias Horton Underwood, wife of Revenant Underwood and a medical missionary herself, which makes the commitment of the Underwood couple even more meaningful."

Missionary Hyun Kwang Shin has been engaged in missionary work in Paraguay for 27 years since 1994. With "Peace of Christ" as the ministry theme, he pioneered churches by missionarying the indigenous Paraguayans, and established a school "Colegio La Paz" with the approval of the Paraguayan government to conduct educational missions. In addition, Shin also established a school for the indigenous Paraguayans to provide education to fight illiteracy and to protect the people’s sovereignty and human rights. "I feel the touch of the Lord who comforts and encourages us through this award," said Shin in his acceptance speech.

Missionary Se-Kwan Oh has been doing missionary work in Thailand for 31 years since 1990. Oh has pioneered churches for the Thai people, as he established the Thailand Methodist Seminary to train pastors. He consistently holds seminars on Thai pastoral retraining education and works with Thai church leaders through the activities of the Evangelical Fellowship of Thailand. Oh is also devoted to providing scholarships and relief activities for the underprivileged. In his acceptance speech, Oh vowed to "do the rest of my life as a missionary in Thailand, following the example of Revenant Underwood."

Missionaries Soon-young Jung (Left) and Euibae Kim

Missionary Soon-young Jung has been engaged in missionary work in Cambodia for 22 years since 1999. Established for children in slums, the Hosanna Kindergarten under Jung's initiative gradually expanded and developed into the Hosanna School that educates children from kindergarten to high school. Furthermore, Jung is working for the Cambodian churches through cooperation with various organizations to train Cambodia's next-generation leaders through activities at the Institute for Cambodia Church History. "I merely did what I had to do, but I received an honorable and undeserved award," said Jung. "I will always remember the spirit of Revenant Underwood and become a missionary who befits this award."
