Launch of an open knowledge channel where knowledge can be shared by all
On September 6, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea has launched ‘LearnUs,’ the knowledge-sharing platform pioneering the education revolution in the new media-digital era, for the public.
Since earlier this year, LearnUs, developed by Yonsei University, has been supporting the smooth operation of non-face-to-face classes by upgrading its existing server-based teaching and learning support system to a cloud-based innovative digital education platform, in response to rapid changes in educational media and its paradigms accelerated by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. Yonsei University is now opening up the opportunity for the public to access and share its quality educational resources anywhere, anytime.
LearnUs stands for ‘Learning Ubiquitous square,’ and it serves as an open channel for anyone, anytime, and anywhere. In particular, with LearnUs being the first open online education platform launched by a higher education institution in Korea, the strength of LearnUs lies in the provision of excellent and reliable content, based on verified faculty and accumulated educational and research achievements of Yonsei University. LearnUs aims to contribute to bridging the educational gap between the underprivileged and the local community by adding empathy and familiarity on top of the platform's quality and reliability.
LearnUs offers four programs: 'Professional Program,' 'Open Program,' 'International Program,' and 'Degree Program.' The Professional Program, consisting of both free and paid courses, allows users to acquire expertise and the latest skills in each field while learning general culture and current affairs issues. The Open Program offers free content for any member of the public without the need to register or log in, as users are granted access to several exemplary lectures conducted in Yonsei University, health-related information clips by Severance Hospital, and promotional videos of its respective departments. In the International Program, users can enjoy a wide variety of K-contents such as Korean language courses, Korean culture, society, and economy. Lastly, the Degree Program would serve as a platform for Yonsei University's faculties and students, supporting the provision of excellent educational content, improvement of teaching methods, and enhancement of learning ability by offering the cutting-edge teaching and learning environment. LearnUs plans to continue updating content to reflect the social trends, users' demands, and users' opinions.
By operating a full-scale education platform using virtual space technology, Yonsei University plans to actively engage in communicating with education consumers globally. With that, Yonsei University is expected to once again establish its firm position as a pioneer in the global education market as well as a leader among the higher education institutions in South Korea.
The grand opening ceremony of LearnUs was held on September 6, at the LearnUs Studio on the Sinchon Campus. At the event, reports on the progress of the LearnUs establishment, ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the LearnUs Studio, and the demonstration of LearnUs platform were held. In addition, a special lecture on "Citizenship, Communication, and Creativity" was also carried out by Honorary Professor Seong-Ho Lee. With the enforcement of nationwide social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the scale of the event had to be minimized, but participants were able to view the entire event through live broadcasting on the LearnUs website.
