College of Commerce and Economics Holds the Unveiling Ceremony for the Bust of Kim Woo-choong

Bust erected to remember the late Kim’s affection for his alma mater and convey his message to his juniors

On May 7, 2021, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea held the unveiling ceremony of the bust of the former Daewoo Group Chairman Kim Woo-choong (1936-2019), at Daewoo Hall on the Sinchon Campus.

The late Kim entered the Department of Economics at the College of Commerce and Economics of Yonsei University in 1956 and graduated in 1960. After graduating, he founded Daewoo in 1967, which was once ranked as the second largest conglomerate in Korea. In 1985, Kim received an honorary doctorate in economics from Yonsei University, and served as President of the Alumni Association of the Department of Economics (1989-1997) and President of the Yonsei University Alumni Association (1997-2000). Furthermore, the late chairman donated 1.6 million㎡ of land for the Mirae Campus (formerly Wonju Campus), in addition to numerous campus construction funds for buildings such as Daewoo Hall, Amphitheater, Alumni Hall, Engineering Hall, Centennial Hall, etc. and also scholarships and development funds.

Yonsei University erected a bust to remember Kim’s affection for his alma mater and convey his message to his juniors. The ceremony was scheduled to be held in last December to mark first anniversary of his decease, but it was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and took place on May 7 this year. The bust of the late chairman Kim, created by collecting donations from College of Commerce and Economics, College of Business, and alumni, is 70cm wide, 60cm long, and 185cm high (including 95.5cm stylobate). It was built across the bust of Professor Lee Sun-tak Lee, the first Dean of the College of Commerce, located to the left of the entrance on the first floor of Daewoo Hall.

The event, led by the College of Commerce and Economics (Dean Doowon Lee), was attended by the bereaved families of Kim, including the widowed Chairman Chung Hee-ja, the sons Kim Sun-hyup and Kim Sun-yong, as well as Yonsei University President Seoung Hwan Suh, Yonsei Alumni Association President Kyung-sun Yu, and major figures from Daewoo Group. In particular, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Korea Nguyen Vu Tung and the Student Council President Seoyoung Lee of the Colleges of Commerce, Economics, and Business also participated in the ceremony.

“As a leading entrepreneur, Chairman Kim has instilled a great deal of dreams and challenges for young people in Korea,” President Suh of Yonsei University said in his greeting. “Yonsei University will produce the second and third Kim Woo-Choong, a leader who will lead the wide world that he dreamed of.”

According to President Yu of the Yonsei University Alumni Association, “Each building on the Yonsei Campus is constructed with the devotion of all alumni, but the devotion that Chairman Kim has poured into every corner of the campus, including Daewoo Hall, will always be remembered by Yonsei.”
