Yonsei University Signs a MOU with KAIST for Full-Scale Exchanges

Establishment of a full-scale cooperation system through open and shared campuses

On June 17, 2021, Yonsei University signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KAIST for the “Cooperation Agreement for the Implementation of Open and Shared Campuses.”

By founding open and shared campuses, both universities strive to create full-scale cooperation covering the fields of education, research, and infrastructure. This cooperation serves the aim of strengthening the education system that will lead interdisciplinary research and accommodate for future changes anticipated by the 4th Industrial Revolution.

In the field of education, the two universities will develop a joint online curriculum and shared lectures adopting the method of team teaching. They will also co-create educational content based on advanced teaching methods including artificial intelligence (AI). The exchange of human resources including professors and students will also be expanded. In particular, as part of the expansion of student exchanges, both universities will proceed with various joint projects that will help to commercialize creative start-up ideas from outstanding students in both universities.

In the field of research, the two universities will lead joint research projects, by providing incentives for outstanding research performance such as joint papers and patents, thereby aiming to expand exchanges and cooperation between researchers from both universities.

For infrastructure, opportunities to utilize joint research equipment are provided to the same level as members of both universities, and libraries of both universities are mutually open to each other.

President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University said, “Through this agreement, we will promote innovative education and pioneering research, continuous technology commercialization, and establishment of start-ups. This will serve to foster global talent that will lead the future and contribute to the growth of South Korea and value creation.”

President Kwang Hyung Lee of KAIST said, “This agreement will allow both schools to take a step closer to their dreams of being world-class universities. Through this agreement, the two universities will create synergy on education, research, and infrastructure which can lead to fostering talent that can question the world, leading pioneering research for the 4th Industrial Revolution and contributing to the growth of South Korea overall.”

Meanwhile, Yonsei University signed an agreement with POSTECH in 2018 on the promotion of open and shared campuses for the first time. They have been actively working together on projects in each field of education, research, and infrastructure including expansion of joint curricula, and conducting joint research on advanced technologies.
