Opening Ceremony to Mark the Establishment of Yonsei Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence

Mission to foster high-end talents in South Korea's AI sector

On June 10, 2021, the opening ceremony to mark the establishment of Yonsei University’s Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Commons, the Sinchon Campus of Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea.

Though Yonsei was shortlisted for the 'Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence Support Project' under the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) in June 2020, the opening ceremony was held more than a year later due to the COVID-19 pandemics. The following ceremony was held in order of an opening ceremony, followed by a signboard presentation and an exhibition of Yonsei's research achievements in the field of AI up to date. Additionally, the current progress status of the 'AI Data Center', a facility dedicated to the Department of Artificial Intelligence for its research and teaching efforts that amount to 661㎡ in total area, was also presented in the ceremony.

The 'Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence Support Project' under the initiative of MSIT aims to nurture high-end talents who can lead the nation's AI sector, with shortlisted universities granted funding up to 19 billion won, with the selected university receiving 1 billion won on the first year and 2 billion won from the next up to 10 years annually. On top of the financial support from the MSIT, the Department of Artificial Intelligence was promised 10-billion-won investment from the university until 2024, as well as 4 billion won corporate investments from firms such as Samsung Electronics, LG Display, and InBody.

The opening ceremony was held in the presence of representatives from various industries and related organizations who have been supporting the Yonsei Department of Artificial Intelligence, including President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University, Vice Minister Cho Kyeongsik of the MSIT, President Sung Bae Jun of the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), Gu (District) Mayor Mun Seok-Jin of Seodaemun-gu, and CEO Ki-Chul Cha of InBody.

The Department of Artificial Intelligence of Yonsei University conducts research and business cooperation as well as joint international research projects with over 100 domestic and foreign enterprises, universities, and research institutes. Starting from the first semester in March 2020, the department has been recruiting 50 masters and doctorate students annually to nurture world-class artificial intelligence (AI) experts with the support of 5 full-time professors and 50 adjunct professors across various majors to pursue 'AI+X’ convergence education and research. With plans to recruit 15 additional top-class domestic and foreign experts in artificial intelligence as full-time faculty by 2024, the Department of Artificial Intelligence strives to foster advanced, convergent, and business-oriented AI talents with a solid software foundation and artificial intelligence core.

Fostering Advanced and Convergent AI Talents

The faculty, consisting of renowned researchers who published many papers at some of the top international conferences in the field of AI, is dedicated to produce world-class talents with outstanding skills in LE.A.P. (Learning, Architecture, Perception)—the three core technological fields pertaining to AI. Yonsei University, utilizing its characteristics as a university in which active interactions among researchers are feasible, also plans to lead the field of future-oriented convergence research. Additionally, the Department of Artificial Intelligence has the optimal environment for collaborative research with Severance Hospital, and projects focused on M.E.S.H. (Medical, Engineering, Financial Service, Humanity), the four AI convergence research areas, are planned to be carried out. Yonsei also plans to expand its efforts in facilitating AI research and education to the undergraduate students, with the establishment of AI Data Center, Al Convergence Research Institute, and Al Education Center.

Fostering World-Class AI Talents

Yonsei University Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence plans to develop a wide pool of world-class AI talents with practical problem-solving capacity through joint research programs as well as cooperation programs with renowned overseas universities (MIT, Stanford, etc.), multinational corporations (Google, Facebook, etc.), and domestic corporations (Naver, Samsung Electronics, etc.). The department also runs a dual degree program with the University of California, while students pursuing Ph.D. and integrative program are mandated to complete internships at leading multinational corporations to be equipped with global communication skills and practical problem-solving skills in the field.

Fostering Business-Oriented Talents

To facilitate the emergence of AI technology-based start-ups, Yonsei plans to run educational programs on start-ups and technology commercialization through YVIP (Yonsei Venture, Innovation & Startup Program). The YVIP program, which began in 2017, is a comprehensive program to assist start-up creation and to support technology commercialization through programs such as student-led creative research, AI club, Al-Senior-Junior convergence research, and AI start-up mentor/mentee program. In addition, Yonsei University is planning to induce promising AI startups to start businesses and push for investments through the Yonsei Technology Holdings.

"By actively utilizing LearnUs, Yonsei University's newly established education support system, in the campus-wide AI convergence education, as well as the development of various convergence majors, the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence and the Artificial Intelligence Convergence College which will be established this fall, will play a pivotal role in Yonsei University’s artificial intelligence education and research," stated President Seo in the welcoming speech. He also said, "The Department of Artificial Intelligence of Yonsei University will do its best to emerge as the top educational and research institution, and it will go beyond the domestic level to eventually be capable of leading the world's trend in artificial intelligence technology."
