Awarded from the DPM as “Best University” in 2020 Educational Welfare Support for Students with Disabilities
Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea received a signboard and a commendation from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education on April 20 as the best university in the ‘2020 Educational Welfare Support for Students with Disabilities,’ in recognition of its contribution to the development of higher education and enhancement of conditions for the disabled persons.
Yonsei University was selected as the ‘Best University’ in 2011, 2014, and 2017 in the ‘Assessment of Educational Welfare Support for Students with Disabilities’ by the Ministry of Education of South Korea, which has been conducted every three years since 2005. In particular, the Ministry of Education assessed the Sinchon Campus and the International Campus separately, and both of them were evaluated as ‘Best Universities.’
Through this assessment, the Ministry of Education has been evaluating whether the university has a well-equipped system to guarantee the right to study for students with disabilities in the areas of selection, teaching and learning, as well as facilities and equipment. The Disability Service Center under the Yonsei Ethics & Human Rights Committee, in cooperation with relevant departments in the university, allows students with disabilities to conduct priority course registration to enhance their academic performance and university life. Furthermore, the Center provides support for human resources, such as student writers and professional journalists, convenience in classes and tests, as well as textbook production. It also operates and implements systems such as rental and connection of auxiliary (engineering) equipment, operation of wheelchair lift vehicles and rooms for the disabled persons in dormitories, as well as improvement of facilities for the disabled persons.
According to the Disability Service Center, “We will continue to play our role in ensuring the right to study for students with disabilities in the university.”
