On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea signed a trilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI; Director Soonman Kwon) and the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research & Training (NIBRT; CEO Darrin Morrissey) of Ireland for the establishment of ‘K-NIBRT.’

As a follow-up measure for cooperation between KHIDI and NIBRT to nurture bioprocessing trainees, this MOU was signed together with Yonsei University that is selected as the main body of the bioprocessing educational program in October 2020.

Through the signing of this MOU, the three institutions are planned to cooperate with each other as partners to establish a Korean-style advanced bioprocessing education system, such as ▲introduction of NIBRT educational program ▲establishment of the K-NIBRT bioprocessing training center ▲bioindustry education and international exchange and cooperation.

The K-NIBRT project (operation of the Korean NIBRT program-establishment of a bioprocessing training center) is a joint operation project managed by both the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. KHIDI and Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) will take the management role; Incheon City (construction of the center), Incheon Technopark (facility management), and Yonsei University (NIBRT curriculum operation) are carrying out this project as a joint consortium.

K-NIBRT will be formally launched in 2024 to establish the best biopharmaceutical processing expert training system in the Asia-Pacific region by introducing the education system of Ireland’s NIBRT, the world’s best biopharmaceutical training institution, in Korea. Prior to the official opening, pilot training that reflects the trend of advanced bioprocessing and the demands of domestic companies is planned to start at Yonsei University’s International Campus from July 2021 for incumbent and job seekers.

Once a full-fledged contract for introduction is signed based on this MOU, K-NIBRT will enhance global cooperation as a global partner of NIBRT of Ireland, and trainees who finished K-NIBRT training can receive a certificate that has the same effect as having completed NIBRT training.

The NIBRT of Ireland started first with government-led investment to nurture biopharmaceutical talents. It provides field training to a wide range of trainees from high school graduates to master’s and doctoral degrees throughout the entire pharmaceutical and bioprocessing, including pharmaceutical production, pharmaceutical good manufacturing practice (GMP), and quality control (QC).

President Suh of Yonsei University said, “We will do our best to build a curriculum that corresponds to the domestic demand and situation by rapidly introducing an advanced curriculum from a pharmaceutical powerhouse of Ireland and modifying it to meet the Korean National Competency Standards (NCS).”

According to KHIDI Director Kwon, “If a Korean-style bioprocessing educational system is established through cooperation with NIBRT to establish K-NIBRT, it will solve a challenge of a lack of manpower in the growing pharmaceutical bioindustry and further increase the global reputation of K-BIO.”
