Yonsei University-Incheon City Wins National Bioprocessing Training Center Project
Yonsei University-Incheon City Wins National Bioprocessing Training Center Project

New center to boost growth of biopharma talent with $122 million investment funds

Yonsei International Campus located in Songdo, Incheon

The Yonsei University-Incheon City-Incheon Techno Park consortium has been selected for a major state-funded project to train bioprocessing experts. The announcement was made by The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) on October 15, 2020.

The project will establish a new bioprocess training center as a state-run educational institution that trains specialists to develop and manufacture biopharmaceuticals. With combined investment funds totaling 139.8 billion won ($122 million) for six years from 2020 to 2025, the center is to be the first of its kind in Asia and third worldwide.

The national project arose from a collaboration between MOTIE and MOHW to meet the demand for talent growth in the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The two ministries joined forces to build Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP*) training facilities and implement the curriculum of the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT**) for the center. The joint project is duly named “Korean NIBRT Program – Bioprocessing Training Center Project.”

*GMP: Practices required to conform to guidelines recommended by agencies that control the authorization and licensing of the manufacture of pharmaceutical products

**NIBRT: Global center of excellence for training and research in bioprocessing located in Dublin, Ireland

To match the 52.7 billion won in state funds and 19.2 billion won in city funds, Yonsei University will invest 67.9 billion won to provide land and construct additional buildings, totaling 139.8 billion won ($122 million) in combined investment funds.

MOTIE and Incheon City will begin constructing the center at the Yonsei International Campus in Songdo, Incheon from next year. MOHW and Yonsei University will commence pilot education by recruiting and training instructors and securing temporary education centers at the Y-PLAZA on campus. The center aims to train 100 people annually on a pilot basis until 2023 and 2,000 annually after the center completes construction and officially opens in 2024.

“We welcome this opportunity to commit to training experts that have learned and practiced overall bioprocessing procedures,” said Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Sung Yun-mo. “This project will play a fundamental role in the global growth of South Korea’s biopharma industry.”

“This project will help us (the government) build a systematic training system to nurture experts in biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing,” commented Health and Welfare Minister Park Neung-hoo. “I believe that South Korea’s training program will become the new global standard in bioprocessing.”
