Yonseian-led Skincare Startup Botanicsens wins 2020 Korean Brand Leader Award

Professor Taesun Park’s research-based Botanicsens wins functional cosmetics division

Korean skincare startup Botanicsens Inc., established by Professor Taesun Park of the Department of Food & Nutrition at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, won the 2020 Korean Brand Leader Award in the functional cosmetics (derma skincare) division.

A rising startup in South Korea and the global market, Botanicsens is a dermacosmetic brand that uses scientific research and natural ingredients from flowers to strengthen skin resilience. The brand is known for its self-developed flagship lineup: Ato line that alleviates atopy and moisturization of dry skin, Regen and Body Care lines with patented decanal and ionone aroma compounds to promote collagen biosynthesis, and Scalp Tonic line that activates hair follicles and aids hair nutrition.

Botanicsens’ high-function products are the outcome of Professor Park’s long-term research on functional aroma compounds that affect the body. After first discovering that drug action for anti-obesity medication was sited in olfactory receptors, Professor Park’s research lab (TSPARK Lab) continued research on how functionalities of scent compounds affect the improvement of skin wrinkles, moisturization, brightening, and atopy.

“Since my discovery that olfactory receptors are located across the entire body, I first focused my research on functionalities of olfactory receptors and scent compounds in disease treatments,” said Professor Park in her award acceptance speech. “This was where I found various botanical scent compounds that enhance skin function. With research outcomes pointing towards a breakthrough in skincare, launching a dermacosmetic brand was indeed a new challenge and opportunity for me.”

Armed with over 35 publications in SCI-listed journals and patented technologies on scent compounds, Professor Park aims to lead a new paradigm of dermacosmetic products that give skin cells its natural strength to improve resilience.

Korean Brand Leader Awards recognizes leading companies that pioneer the domestic brand market with innovative ideas, stating that “Botanicsens develops effective skincare products with natural ingredients” and that they “hope to see Botanicsens will continue to develop good cosmetic products that satisfy consumers in the years to come.”

Botanicsens crowned the prestigious award in only three years since its establishment in 2017. “I am overwhelmed with responsibility and joy, and will exert my utmost effort to develop Botanicsens into a brand that consumers love,” she remarked.
