2019/2020 Winter Abroad at Yonsei (WAY) program receives record-high number of participants

Aaron and Kiani are among the many international participants that have attended Winter Abroad at Yonsei (WAY), a five-week winter program held at Yonsei University’s main Sinchon campus in Seoul for international students who wish to enjoy the winter in Korea.
The rapidly rising popularity of WAY resulted in a record-high 630 international students from 110 universities from 38 countries and 90 Yonsei students attending the 2019/2020 program, which began with an Orientation session on December 27, 2019.
Orientation for WAY 2019/2020Winter Abroad at Yonsei provides students the opportunity to catch up on their academic studies, meet professors in an intimate setting, and enjoy Korean culture with the companionship of Yonsei students and international students from all over the world. The program offers a variety of courses and Korean culture activities with a three-week academic achievement option (Session 1) and a two-week Korean language option (Session 2).
Session 1 focuses on intensive coursework, where participants choose morning and afternoon courses from a wide range of academic fields, including Korean studies, economics and management, humanities and social sciences, and science and engineering, with all classes conducted in English. This year’s newly launched Session 2 Korean language option provides intensive Korean language courses along with special lectures on the Korean economy and society.
Other than academic studies, WAY participants also encounter the Korean culture together on weekends through various activities such as the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) tour, Taekwondo classes, and a ski trip in the countryside. Other popular programs include a Korean cooking class and K-Beauty company tour, where participants learn about new trends in Korean fashion and culture.
This year, Winter Abroad at Yonsei celebrates its seventh anniversary since its initial launch in 2013 as the first winter study abroad program among Korean universities. Since then, WAY has secured its status as an innovative program that promotes international education and intercultural exchange. Over 2,660 students have attended WAY, with this year’s number of students increasing over 44 percent compared to last year. The cohort of participants is also becoming increasingly diverse, with many students coming from the Asia-Pacific region and the U.S. as well as from countries including Germany, France, and Mexico.
The steady success of WAY attributes to the collective efforts and dedication of the faculty and administrative staff at the Office of International Affairs (OIA) to continuously develop the program according to participants’ needs and interests. “Winter in Korea is filled with excitement, and we are doing our best to ensure that international students maximize the Yonsei experience during their winter here,” remarked Mijin Moon, Manager of WAY.
“We strive to provide both academic scholarship and global experience to WAY participants through lectures taught by world-class faculty and meaningful cultural activities held throughout Korea,” said Professor Doowon Lee, Vice President for International Affairs. Professor Lee oversees all OIA programs, including the Exchange/Visiting Student Program and the Yonsei International Summer School, the two flagship international non-degree programs at Yonsei University.
