Social Innovation Capstone Project 2 wins Bronze in Social Sciences at QS Reimagine Education Conference

Yonsei University crowned the Bronze Award in Social Sciences for Underwood International College (UIC)'s Social Innovation Capstone Project 2 at the QS Reimagine Education Conference - a global event and competition attended by over academic leaders and industry figures working to innovate the future of education.

The competition and awards ceremony was held during the QS Reimagine Education Conference in London during December 8-10. At the conference, Yonsei University showcased two short-listed projects to a global audience of 650 educational leaders:  UIC’s Social Innovation Capstone Project 2 and the (Freshman) Residential College’s Living and Learning Community-based Immersive Mentoring Camp for middle school students.

The winning UIC Social Innovation Capstone Project 2 aimed to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through technological innovation in partnership with students and faculties of Design Factory Global Network (DFGN)*. Project participants addressed social challenges by developing business solutions based on IoT (Internet of Things) products and services.

Team ideas included LIKA, a live interactive communication assistant for seniors living alone that provides a safer view of the outside world from home, and PEEK-A-BOO, a real-time inventory tracker and organizer for clothes that help children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) hone independent living skills.

The project enabled students to:

create value for solving everyday social issues (e.g., aging, safety, environment, healthcare) to achieve the SDGs as social innovators of the future society

develop a working knowledge of IoT hardware and software to implement an innovative IoT-based business model

experience local teamwork and global collaboration as an interdisciplinary team through design thinking and systems thinking.

To promote value-sharing among Design Factory Global Network (DFGN) members, Design Factory Korea at Yonsei created and distributed IoT hardware/software training videos for students, while helping project participants share their solution ideas for inspiration.
