Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment wins Minister of Health and Welfare Award in Hope Sharing (Mentoring)

The Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University won the National Sharing Grand Award from the Minister of Health and Welfare in the Hope Sharing (Mentoring) category for its outstanding contributions to young people and the mentoring field.

The National Sharing Grand Awards, known as one of the most prestigious awards in the donation field, are presented annually to individuals and organizations to recognize their deep engagement in meeting the needs of the community through donation activities in four categories: Human Talent Sharing, Resource Sharing, Life (Donor) Sharing, and Hope Sharing (Mentoring).

The Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) at Yonsei University received the Hope Sharing (Mentoring) Award for its Dream Start program, a local youth mentoring program that provides learning opportunities for underprivileged students in the Seodaemun-gu district surrounding the campus. In cooperation with Seodaemun-gu Office, Yonsei undergraduate and graduate students help young teenagers strengthen learning skills by tutoring basic subjects, build character through personal counseling, and broaden cultural experiences by attending performances and field trips together.

Since the launch of the Dream Start program in 2009, IGEE has provided impactful mentoring to 905 middle and high school students, while providing scholarships for the Yonsei student mentors. While mentees have shown significant improvement in academic performance and self-esteem, mentors have also gained valuable experience in community service and leadership.

In addition to Dream Start, IGEE manages other programs such as the Vietnam Overseas Volunteer Program and Yonsei Hope Expedition, a summer mentoring program that aims to increase educational opportunities for students in marginalized areas of Korea, including remote provinces and islands. Yonsei students volunteer in the summer camp to design and run various motivational programs for middle and high schoolers to develop learning skills and explore career paths.

“This National Sharing Grand Award goes to all Yonsei student mentors who have wholeheartedly devoted their time and energy to engage proactively in our programs,” said Sohn Myongsei, Chairman of IGEE. “The Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment at Yonsei University will continue to provide educational support to underprivileged students at the local, national, and global level with its social contribution programs.”

The awards ceremony took place on October 10, 2019, at the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) New Wing in Yeouido, Seoul, Korea, and was co-hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, KBS, and the Community Chest of Korea.
