Yonsei Enters World's Top 200 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020

Yonsei University has joined the world’s top 200 universities, placing 197th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 announced on September 12, 2019. Yonsei University has continued to expand its influence and presence on the global stage, rising in the rankings for the fourth consecutive year and especially jumping 13 places from 210th to 197th place this year.

The THE World University Rankings include almost 1,400 universities across 92 countries and is based on 13 performance indicators grouped into five areas that measure an institution’s performance: Teaching (the learning environment); Research (volume, income and reputation); Citations (research influence); Industry Income (knowledge transfer); and International Outlook (staff, students and research). The first three areas each account for 30% of the total score, while the remaining two collectively account for the remaining 10%.

Yonsei University has continued to make strenuous efforts to advance its core missions as a research-intensive university, showing steady growth in the five performance areas. In particular, Yonsei ranked 26th globally in Industry Income, securing an unparalleled level of research income from industry compared to other universities around the world. The University had also placed number one in the world in Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure of the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings 2019 based on its research on industry and innovation, number of patents and spin-off companies, and research income from industry, earlier this year.

Yonsei University is also on par with world-class universities in its learning and research environment, placing among the world’s top 100 in Teaching (97th) and Research (106th) for the THE World University Rankings 2020. The numbers reflect the influential work taking place at Yonsei University.

As part of efforts to educate future leaders who pioneer academic development to impact society, Yonsei University established the Institute for Higher Education Innovation to nurture social innovators with problem-solving skills. Yonsei is also educating global talent for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution by establishing an industry-academic cooperation model through various collaboration programs with local start-up companies, small and medium-sized companies, large corporations, and government research institutes.

In addition, Yonsei University is making continuous changes to achieve world-class research performance by launching Yonsei Frontier Lab, the university’s central platform for international joint research, in 2017 and establishing Yonsei Science Park, an innovative industrial-academic convergence research center, at Yonsei International Campus in Songdo, Incheon.
