Over 100 students and faculty participate in 2019 YISS Open Run
In the early morning of July 11, over 100 Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) students, as well as Yonsei faculty and staff, gathered in front of the Underwood Courtyard located in the central area of Yonsei’s main campus in Seoul, Korea, to participate in the 2019 YISS Open Run for Charity event.
Group photo with Yonsei University President Kim Yong-HakThe inaugural 2019 YISS Open Run was an active and fun event for students and faculty to donate their time and energy to raise money for a good cause. For the event, Yonsei University raised 10,000 won per runner to provide customized wheelchairs for students with congenital muscular dystrophy. The Open Run also provided a unique opportunity for students and faculty to engage with each other while jogging and taking in the fresh morning air on campus.
The 30-minute event began at 8:00 am before YISS morning classes, kicking off with a warm welcome and words of encouragement from Yonsei University President Kim Yong-Hak. “As we give back, raising awareness and keeping in shape along the way, I hope that this special event will remain in the hearts of everyone participating this morning,” he said.
Donation ceremony with Lee Jin-Hyeok, Head of Rhythm of HopePresident Kim’s greetings were followed by a donation ceremony with Rhythm of Hope, a nonprofit private organization run by Yonsei students that creates promotional content for fundraising, which will distribute the donation. After the ceremony, participating students began stretching for the run, chatting and posing for pictures with Yonsei’s eagle mascot throughout the warm-up session.
The two-kilometer running course began and ended in front of the Underwood Statue, following along the main Baekyangro road and passing by the Main Gate as the halfway point. Yonsei University’s physical education majors also participated in the event, leading the way throughout the running course.
“It was great running through the campus while taking in the fresh air,” commented a YISS participant after the run. “It was so rewarding to run for my health while donating for charity at the same time - I hope that my contribution will positively impact others.”
“In spite of the early hours and the rain, many YISS students participated to show their support in helping others, which was very inspiring and very heartwarming,” commented a Yonsei staff member. “We hope the students enjoyed the experience as much as we did.”
Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) opened in 1985 as the first international summer school in Korea, welcoming a record-high 1,500 student participants from 40 countries this year. With 4-week and 6-week program options, YISS features include over 100 courses in various disciplines, research and corporate internships, and exciting events such as the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Tour, SM Town Tour, K-Beauty Tour, E-Sports Tour, Boryeong Mud Festival, 3-day trip to the southern areas of Korea, and a wrap-up Summer Fiesta barbeque at the President’s Residence.
