5 Best Study Spots & De-stress Spots on Campus

The perfect time for study as well as relaxation at Yonsei University

Now is the perfect time for study as well as relaxation at Yonsei University. Students are currently in the midst of the busiest period of the fall semester - preparing reports, making up for lost points on midterms, and participating in study groups. On the other hand, Yonsei’s green campus is one of the most beautiful spots in the central area of Seoul, where the Yonsei community, as well as visitors, come in fall with family and friends to the campus grounds to relax and reflect among the fall foliage.

For this article, Yonsei University shares five of the best study spots on campus and five of the best de-stress spots on campus.

University Library

If you have never been to Yonsei’s libraries, are you truly a Yonseian? The interconnected Central Library and Yonsei-Samsung Library are huge with over 6,500 study/reading seats, 900 public computers, 1.5 million books, and countless e-resources. Features also include a reading room for students with disabilities in Yonsei’s efforts to be an inclusive university. Besides the wide selection of books and resources, there is also a 24-hour study room for that last-minute cramming the night before an exam or for those of you who are generally more productive. You need to book your spots online though, and seats tend to get snapped up quicker than K-Pop concert tickets during finals period so be early to secure a seat!

School of Business Building

Did you know that our business building has comfortable study areas located throughout the first two floors? The best part about studying here, especially during spring and autumn, is facing the beautiful scenery over at the Underwood Hall building as well as the huge trees behind the glass wall of the Atrium. Since it is important to take breaks while studying, doesn’t it make sense to study in a beautiful spot which also puts you in a better mood?

The Commons

There are many open study spots in The Commons, the underground area located across from the Student Union Hall and near the Central Library. Besides being relatively quiet, there are cafes, a bakery, salad store and a convenient store in the area so you can snack while studying or take a break to have a proper meal in between study sessions. It is important to eat well and stay hydrated while studying.

On-campus Cafes

Are you someone who cannot study in places which are too quiet? Or perhaps you’re looking for a nice spot to complete your assignments? Then you might want to consider going to a cafe. There are many cafes around campus where you can plug in your computer and just work away.

Outdoors

If the weather isn’t too cold or too hot, you can consider studying outdoors. There are outdoor study spots all around campus, and unlike indoor spots where you are expected to be extremely quiet, outdoor study spots allow you to be more comfortable when doing group projects. The Amphitheater is also a quiet and open place to study, where there are long stone seats for group project meetings while enjoying the weather.

Now that we’ve shared our favorite study spots on campus, here are our favorite de-stress spots!

Cheongsongdae

What better way to de-stress than to talk a walk through nature? Cheongsongdae, which is known as the "garden" of Yonsei, is a quiet wooded area near Underwood Hall towards the East Gate of the campus where you can stroll around the grounds and take a breather. It is said that simply being around plants can help you calm down and induce a relaxation response, so visit Cheongsongdae when you feel overwhelmed with everyday life. There is no need to visualize your happy place here – you can just take in the peaceful environment.

Global Lounge

Another feature of The Commons is the Global Lounge, where you can rest on the comfortable chairs provided. The place feels as cozy as home, so you may end up staying here in between classes with a good book or quietly listening to music with headphones. Just remember not to get too comfortable you end up dozing off!

Yonsei-Samsung Library

If you do want a place where you can doze off on campus, there is the popular “No-Stress” area with beanbags at the Yonsei-Samsung Library. These beanbags can be found on the first floor, but you may have to fight others to get the spot since it is probably the most comfortable place on campus for that power nap between study sessions.  You can also take a break from reality by watching weekly films at the Library Theater located in the Multimedia Center (3F), which are screed by media staff members and Yeonsi, the library cinema club.

Underwood Memorial House

Step away from the screen and shut offline in one of the most enclosed areas of campus – Underwood Memorial House. Just walking there through the greenery can help clear your head and boost endorphins as you take deep breaths of the fresh air. The Underwood Memorial House features an attic with comfortable seating and soft lighting for reflection. Although the space is originally meant for children, students can take a few moments for some down time. The environment is quiet and you can also experience the history of Yonsei University.

Outdoor BenchesDo you enjoy people-watching? There are many benches located all over campus where you can just stare into nothingness or watch people walk by. You can also say hello to the Yonsei cats relaxing on campus. Sometimes doing nothing can be the most relaxing activity in the world.
