Students gear up for job-seeking at 2018 Yonsei Job Fair

Every year, Yonsei University hosts the Yonsei Job Fair to provide opportunities for job-seeking students to directly meet company employers and identify current and future job opportunities in a wide variety of industries and career fields. This year’s fair was held for three days during September 4–6 at The Commons of the University’s main Sinchon campus in Seoul, Korea.

More than 200 companies — including major companies such as Samsung, Hyundai Motor, SK, CJ, POSCO, KT, and Lotte Group — attended the 2018 Yonsei Job Fair. In particular, many foreign companies participated this year. “Foreign companies have often participated our previous fairs, but it was the first time they opened booths this year,” commented a representative of the Office of Student Affairs & Services at Yonsei University, the host organization of the event.

Just in time for Korea’s annual fall recruitment season, Yonsei University students and young job seekers had the opportunity to obtain useful information on companies directly provided by company recruiters and employment professionals. Company booths gave useful information on up-to-date recruitment plans and held one-on-one consultations with recruitment representatives. The fair also featured special lectures on job strategies by personnel managers of major domestic corporations, public corporations, and foreign companies.

At the fair, company recruiters stressed to students that employers are currently looking for three things from new employees: work competence, global experience, and strong motivation. These factors are on the trend due to many recent cases of new employees quitting soon after being hired because they were unable to adapt to the working environment.

“I was only vaguely aware of current employment rates and recruitment fields, but after consulting with career professionals today, I now definitely know how to apply for a job,” said Kyung-Hee Kim, a senior student at Yonsei who attended the fair.

“Since I was able to meet current employees in the sales departments of various companies, I learned a lot about what to expect from the real-life work environment,” remarked Soo-Yeon Kim, another senior Yonsei student who is interested in a career in sales.

Graduate student Min-jae Heon commented, “I was happy to receive professional advice on job opportunities for candidates with an MA or a Ph.D. degree. It was great to hear more about current employees’ academic backgrounds, job requirements, and working environment.”

The 2018 Yonsei Job Fair was not only open to Yonsei University students, but also to job seekers from the surrounding community. The number of participating companies was the largest yet, attracting over 5,000 visitors throughout the three-day event.

“By learning more about companies’ specific recruitment strategies at the Yonsei Job Fair, Yonsei students and job seekers can focus on creating more detailed job searching plans that meet company requirements. I hope our fair becomes well known for introducing a wide range of different companies as well as providing reliable job market information for our students as well as the regional community,” said Seung-Hyeon Kim, Manager of the Student Scholarship and Career Team at the Office of Student Affairs & Services at Yonsei University.
