Addressing Legal Policies for Sustainable Development

2018 Peking-Yonsei Law School Symposium


On August 29, Yonsei University Law School and Peking University Law School held a joint symposium under the theme, “Legal Policies for Sustainable Development in China and Korea” at the Law School building located at Yonsei University’s main Sinchon campus in Seoul, Korea. Held in partnership with the Institute for Legal Studies of Yonsei University, the Symposium was composed of three sessions with representative professors from both law schools giving a presentation on the various issues and challenges of legal policies for sustainable development.

From Yonsei University Law School, Professor Joongi Kim spoke on challenges and reform of investor-state dispute settlement, Professor Hanki Sohn discussed judicial management in Asia, and Professor Duk Yeon Lee presented on critical consideration to the propertization and commodification of pollution allowances viewed from the aspects of political economy, ecosophy, and ethics.


From Peking University Law School, Professor Zhiyong Zhang gave a presentation on the challenges the multilateral trade system are facing and its implications for sustainable economic development, Professor Zhewei Liu discussed the development and issue of Chinese electronic litigation from the perspective of internet court in China and Professor Ying Song presented on the integration and evolution of sustainable development in China, followed by a comprehensive discussion on all topics discussed.


The two schools share a long history of institutional partnership, having first established a collaborative agreement in 2001 and further developing relations with a student exchange agreement in 2016.

Yonsei University Law School has the highest accumulative passing rate of the bar exam among all law schools in Korea, averaging at 85%. It has continued its maximum efforts to be able to fully meet the demands for specialization, globalization, and information-based education as a leading legal educational institution.


The Law School has actively pursued academic engagement on a global scale in both aspects of research and education, with various dual degree programs and exchange partnerships with leading institutions across the globe. Current dual degree partner institutions include the University of California Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law and Washington University School of Law. In addition, Yonsei University Law School has an extensive student exchange network with 35 partnerships in 14 countries including Georgetown Law and the University of Copenhagen Faculty of Law.


Yonsei University and Peking University also share various links at both the university and college level, with a university-wide MOU and student exchange agreement established in 2009 and several college-level agreements between the Yonsei School of Business and Peking University Guanghua School of Management, as well as the medical colleges.
