The Institute for Higher Education Innovation at Yonsei University announced its new partnership with the “Towners at Work-Station” project — a contest-type initiative where selected student teams receive support for extracurricular activities that can help solve social problems and introduce innovation towards a sustainable society. With the aim to nurture compassionate talents of the future, the Institute will financially support 51 Yonsei teams and 273 students selected for the project.

The Institute for Higher Education Innovation aims to positively impact society by educating next-generation talents and promoting innovation in higher education through the reform of Yonsei University’s formal and informal learning programs. With this new partnership, the Institute will encourage students to actively participate in solving domestic and international issues and thus develop their character to become humanitarian members of society.

The funding of the project, totaling at 200 million KRW, is the largest amount a Korean university has supported for such an initiative. Yonsei University plans to hold the project annually to continue assisting students in creating social value.

The extracurricular activity contest consisted of six overall themes: Public Value Learning, Global Social Entrepreneurship, Social Innovation Externship, OT2, Social Innovation Network and Social Venture Establishment. 51 teams composed of a total of 273 students were selected in the final evaluation round.

The selected teams will identify social issues and find solutions according to their proposed themes, such as recognizing public value, addressing issues in the domestic and international community, opening social innovation forums, and nurturing socially innovative entrepreneurs. The project outcome will be implemented throughout the university and into the community.

The three leading teams were the “WhiteBulls” team, which proposed to provide a heating solution for the elderly residing alone in poor living conditions, the “Rhythm of Hope” team, which will carry out international relief activities and create relative contents, and the “MPL” team, which will raise student awareness and participation in sustainable development goals by holding public seminars every month.

All selected teams will launch their activities from July 16, 2018 until February 2019 with supporting funds ranging from 1.5 million KRW to 10 million KRW per team. At the end of the activity period, the Institute for Higher Education Innovation will hold a Social Impact Championship event to provide the opportunity for student teams to share their activity results and choose a final winning team.

The Institute for Higher Education Innovation will continue to support activities and experiments for solving problems in society around the world in accordance with evolving social demands, and will provide various means of support to make meaning contributions through cooperation with various members of society.
