Yonsei Pursues Research without Borders In Nanoscience and Medicine

New Y-IBS (Institute for Basic Science) Hall to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for convergence research


The Y-IBS (Institute for Basic Science) Hall officially opened at Yonsei University’s main campus in Seoul, Korea in May, 2018 to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative convergence research and interdisciplinary education. Designed specifically to house the Y-IBS Center for NanoMedicine, the building structure implements the “Center without Barriers” concept by removing all dividing walls within the building and featuring an embedded staircase to create an open environment for researchers to generate convergence research through collaboration without boundaries.



The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was founded by the Korean government in 2011 as Korea’s first world-class basic science research organization, similar to Germany’s academically renowned Max Planck Institutes. According to its primary goal, the Institute will act as a national hub to support research across all fields of basic science, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, life sciences, earth science and interdisciplinary science. So far, 26 IBS centers have been established with an annual funding of 10 billion won for at least 10 years to pursue high-quality research that will increase the national basic science capacity.


Accordingly, the IBS Center for NanoMedicine was launched at Yonsei University in 2015 with the aim to deliver innovative research in the fields of nanoscience and medicine by building a foundation for future-oriented convergence science and creating new breakthroughs at the nexus of nanomaterials and biological systems. Its goal is to (a) develop breakthroughs in nanomedicine to gain a better understanding of the relationship between molecules, materials, and biological systems; (b) create new interdisciplinary science to develop nanomaterials and nanotools that can overcome current limitations in biology and medicine; (c) generate world-class creative research output for nanomedicine; and (d) become a premier global hub where interdisciplinary frontier sciences actively communicate.


The Center’s three main research groups specialize in nanomaterials design, precision nano-imaging and nano-bio interface science, and nanomedicine. “Team Science” is the most important concept, and the groups work collaboratively and synergistically with their different expertise to create innovative science that reaches beyond existing scientific disciplines. In particular, the Center aims to introduce new possibilities to the scientific community by developing “evolutionary nanomaterials” that can accurately monitor and understand biological phenomena. This will ultimately provide promising solutions for many challenges in current medical approaches to diagnosis and treatment, thus making significant contributions to the health and welfare of the Korean society as well as the global community.


The IBS Center for NanoMedicine also provides a cutting-edge postgraduate degree program in nanoscience and nanomedicine to educate the leading scientists of the future through interdisciplinary research and training, nanoscience-based curriculum, and international opportunities. The curriculum provides insight into the latest advances in the emerging sciences and nanomedicine, while the laboratory coursework aims to make new discoveries by examining the diverse and complex phenomena in chemical, physical, and biological processes.


“IBS Center for NanoMedicine is the international hub of nanomedicine, and we hope to appoint excellent researchers from Korea and from around the world,” said Jinwoo Cheon, Director of the Center and professor of chemistry at Yonsei University. “The Center will develop into a world-class research institute that will lead a new paradigm of basic science with creativity and innovation.”
